My Wife died recently from a pulmonary Oedema, which I understand

Resolved Question:

My Wife died recently from a pulmonary Oedema, which I understand is caused by excess fluid in the lungs. Her Death followed a period of 10 weeks in hospital with a broken knee-cap. As She was also suffering from mental health problems no rehabilitation work on the knee was possible. As a consequence my Wife spent almost the whole ten works immobile and in bed. My Wife had no history of respiratory problems. What is the likely cause of fluid developing, are there medical checks to diagnose the problem, can the problem be solved if treated early enough?

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

I am so sorry about the loss of your wife.

Dr. David :

pulmonary edema most commonly comes from heart failure or weakness of the heart, usually from a heart attack which causes heart muscle damage and then the heart can not pump fluid around the body.

Dr. David :

this can lead to fluid backing up in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and also swelling in the legs (peripheral edema)

Dr. David :

there is a good chance she could have developed a silent heart attack while she was in bed for 10 weeks.

Dr. David :

an autopsy after her death could look at her heart to check for signs of heart attack.

Dr. David :

when patients are found to have pulmonary edema, which is new, the heart and looking for signs of a heart attack are the first things to look for.

Dr. David :

I am sorry she suffered from mental health problems as well. this can make things more difficult.

Dr. David :

and even if a heart attack was found, they could have given her medications to lower her blood pressure, but she would not have been able to cardiac rehabilitation either it sounds like

Dr. David :
