Resolved Question:

My husband is suffering from excessive wind (not relieved by Simeticone), extreme tiredness/fatigue, lower back pain, nausea (no vomiting). No diarrhoea or blood in stools. No flatulance. The burping has been going on for the last few years but worsened when he had a cold bug 4 weeks ago. Cold has gone but the other symptoms remain. This morning, after driving his cab all night, he feels like he is aching all over. He cannot sleep through a night without waking to burp. I have tried him on Ranitidine or Simeticone and he has been taking ibuprofen for the pain. Any suggestions of what is wrong or what I can do to make him feel better. We can't get a GP appt until Thursday (possibly Mon if lucky).

Hi Dr Robert,
Yes, he is having abdo pain above his naval; it is intermittent.
No burning sensation in oesophagus.
No underlying health conditions. Gave up smoking just over a year ago.

Dear customer,
Thank you for providing quick additional info.
The symptoms your husband is having are most likely due a condition called GERD(gastro esophageal reflux disease). It is a condition in which the esophagus becomes irritated or inflamed because of acid backing up from the stomach. Also there can be associated gastritis.
The following are the tests that confirm the GERD:Upper endoscopy, barium swallow, esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD).
He should stop taking tab.Ibuprofen as this will aggravate/increase his symptoms of pain abdomen/wind.
Instead of Ibuprofen he can take tab.Acetaminophen.It is not a NSAID & will not cause reflux disease & provide great relief from pain.
Continue giving him tab.Rantac & simethicone. Also you can add cap.Omeprazole 20 mg to get further relief.
All these medications are available as over the counter (OTC) without a prescription & will help him greatly in burping, pain & all other symptoms. He should avoid alcohol consumption and fried, spicy, salty, chilly food items.
He can have a consultation with his doctor to have these above described tests & then medications will be prescribed accordingly.
Thank you
Hope this helped.
My goal is to provide you with excellent service – if you feel you have gotten anything less, please reply back, I am happy to address follow-up questions.
Kind Regards,
