Resolved Question:

Hi, I have recently been experiencing severe problems when I smell stale tobacco or stale body odour. It makes my nose feel blocked and like its on fire. If exposed for to long I develop a severe frontal headache. Fresh tobacco does not affect me as much. I used to smoke 20 per day but am down to 10 or less per week. I am fairly fit and healthy, 56, female and am taking bisoprolol 2.5mgs daily and simvastatin 10mgs at night. The symptoms are very unpleasant. Can you advise please?

Customer:

I just find that stale tobacco and body odour smells cause me to react very badly and dont react to fresh tobacco or sweat?

Dr. Phil, MD :

you may be developing an intolerance or an allergy specifically to that

Dr. Phil, MD :

it could also be that your nose is more sensitive now that you cut back on smoking

Dr. Phil, MD :

this is common

Dr. Phil, MD :

so smells that didn't bother you before now do because you can smell better

Customer:

is there anything I can use to stop the symptoms? I have lost a close friend because of it as I cant bear to be in a room with her as the physical reaction makes me feel so ill. Like someone has put red hot pokers up my nose and my head aches so badly.

Dr. Phil, MD :

I would try to use a substance like vaseline in the nose that blocks the smell

Dr. Phil, MD :

your nose will eventually become less sensitive

Dr. Phil, MD :

but in the meantime, this can help

Customer:
