Hello. I'm Dr. Phil, licensed and practicing internist. Excellent service is my goal.
It can mean a lot of things
It could be inflammation
It could be the cancer is being treated.
It is impossible to know until a follow up scan is done.
CEA doesn't necessarily mean increased cancer
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Thx. It was as follows

colon surgery march - dukes c1

xeloda 4 cycles only

may cea-3

june cea-4

july cea-6

sept cea - 9.8

oct cea- 8 ( for some reason there was a drop after stopping chemo)

sept pet scan - liver met

oct - irinotecan started

dec cea - 9

can this mean chemo not working as no decrease?

Expert:  Dr. Phil, MD replied 2 years ago.
No I don't think so.
In fact, CEA can go up with chemo due to cell destruction
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Oh I see. Is it better in a way in terms of prognosis that a person was a stage 3 but then developed a liver met after surgery rather than first diagnosed at stage 4?

Expert:  Dr. Phil, MD replied 2 years ago.
