I'm a 20 year old female, I'm worried there is something wrong

Resolved Question:

I'm a 20 year old female, I'm worried there is something wrong with me, mental illness is something that has been suggested (Bipolar is the main one that crops up). It has been suggested on a few social occasions by friends and people i know (mainly people asking if there's something wrong). My mum has even said to me at one point that i concern her at times and mental illness runs in her side of the family. Sometimes; like at the moment i survive on 5-6 hours sleep sometimes less, I don't feel tired, lose track of time when i plan to go to bed and then have to get up early for work. Sometimes i just lie in bed all night and don't sleep. I talk alot and also very very quickly. Other days i feel like nothing is going right for me and feel exhausted all the time. Alot of people are starting to notice, it seems to have gotten worse since my late teens, it feels like its harder to be "normal" . I don't want to talk to my GP because he knows my whole family and has for years. Should i be concerned? Is there anything else or anyone else i can see?

Customer:

hi

Dr. Phil, MD :

Hi I'm Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil, MD :

Can I ask your first name?

Customer:

Okay. It's Lisa

Dr. Phil, MD :

Hi Lisa

Dr. Phil, MD :

nice to meet you

Dr. Phil, MD :

I'm sorry you are struggling

Dr. Phil, MD :

does this high energy state alternate with depression?

Customer:

I'm not sure, some days everything feels great, nothing can get me down, other days feels like everything is wrong

Customer:

Sorry thats not a very good answer

Dr. Phil, MD :

it's okay

Dr. Phil, MD :

I do think you probably have bipolar

Dr. Phil, MD :

maybe bipolar 2 disorder

Dr. Phil, MD :

you are going to have to talk to your GP

Dr. Phil, MD :

there is no shame in mental illness

Customer:

What does that mean?

Dr. Phil, MD :

it is a variant of bipolar

Dr. Phil, MD :

It's like bipolar "lite"

Dr. Phil, MD :

like not as severe bipolar

Dr. Phil, MD :

normal bipolar is easy to diagnose. The people are absolutely out of control when they are manic

Customer:

What happens if i don't talk to anyone? Will it get worse?

Dr. Phil, MD :

yes

Customer:

Is there anyway i can see anyone else other than my GP? He's my family GP and i feel like sometimes in the past he hasn't believed me

Customer:

about other things, not anything related to mental illness

Dr. Phil, MD :

you could go private

Dr. Phil, MD :

to a psychiatrist

Customer:

How would i do that?/

Dr. Phil, MD :

just call their office

Dr. Phil, MD :

where do you live? I can find one

Customer:

Berkshire in the UK

Dr. Phil, MD :

ok hang on

Dr. Phil, MD :

http://www.cardinalclinic.co.uk/

Dr. Phil, MD :

check that place out

Customer:

What would happen?

Dr. Phil, MD :

you mean if it gets worse?

Customer:

yes

Dr. Phil, MD :

you will just get more depressed and have worse manic episodes

Customer:

What would they do? Would i have to be medicated? Do i have to tell anyone, like work?

Dr. Phil, MD :

yes they would medicate you

Dr. Phil, MD :

no you don't have to tell work

Dr. Phil, MD :

that is your private business

Customer:

So by law i can keep it to myself? I don't have any obligation to tell my work even though im a dental nurse?

Dr. Phil, MD :

correct.

Dr. Phil, MD :

your job can't discriminate against you

Dr. Phil, MD :

for a mental health issue

Customer:

God.I don't even know how i would go about telling anyone something like this.

Dr. Phil, MD :

just be honest

Customer:

My mum is estranged from her side of the family.

Dr. Phil, MD :

ok

Dr. Phil, MD :

I see

Dr. Phil, MD :

I'm sure a lot of that has to do with not getting help

Customer:

I don't know. She only said about mental illness to me when she was angry. Before that i had no idea. It's just stuck with me. Then having people asking if there was something wrong with me...

Dr. Phil, MD :

I see

Dr. Phil, MD :

well, you only have one choice

Dr. Phil, MD :

you have to get help

Customer:

Is it something that i can outgrow or that will get better as i get older if i got help?

Dr. Phil, MD :

you won't outgrow it

Dr. Phil, MD :

it will get worse if not treated

Dr. Phil, MD :

if you get help, it will improve

Customer:

Will i still be the same person if im on medication or will everyone suddenly notice a dramatic change?

Dr. Phil, MD :

yes, you will

Dr. Phil, MD :

you will just be a little more "balanced"

Customer:

Im not sure where bipolar comes up on that website, i can't find it listed

Dr. Phil, MD :

they will treat it

Dr. Phil, MD :

don't worry

Customer:

Will i be sectioned or anything?

Dr. Phil, MD :

no

Customer:

Are you sure? Or just saying so i will go

Customer:

I just dont want anyone to know

Dr. Phil, MD :

I'm 100% sure

Dr. Phil, MD :

It is illegal

Dr. Phil, MD :

you can't discriminate against someone for something they can't control. It's illegal and wrong

Customer:

I know. I just don't know anyone in my family with mental issues. I see how other people judge. How there is a massive stigma that goes hand-in-hand with the word bipolar.

Dr. Phil, MD :

Well, you can't control other people's reaction

Dr. Phil, MD :

just your own

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay Lisa?

Dr. Phil, MD :

I think you are now armed with good information about what this is and where to do

Dr. Phil, MD :

are you there?

Customer:

Yes

Dr. Phil, MD :

any more questions?

Customer:

Just processing..

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay :)

Dr. Phil, MD :

no problem

Dr. Phil, MD :

take your time

Customer:

How often would i have to go to see them and what is the procedure?

Dr. Phil, MD :

probably ever 3 months

Dr. Phil, MD :

they talk to you and refill meds and see how you are doing.

Dr. Phil, MD :

Lisa, our recommended chat time is about 10 minutes. I have chatted with you for about 40 minutes for the same price

Dr. Phil, MD :

would you mind accepting additional services?

Customer:

What does that mean?

Customer:

I think i just accepted

Dr. Phil, MD :

It just means that I gave you an extra 30 minutes for free

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay thanks

Dr. Phil, MD :

I was just asking for fair compensation for my time. Thank you :)

Customer:

sorry i didn't know

Dr. Phil, MD :

no problem :)

Dr. Phil, MD :

that is why I asked

Customer:

what do i say if i contact the clinic?

Dr. Phil, MD :

tell them that you have been struggling.

Dr. Phil, MD :

and some people have suggested probably bipolar

Dr. Phil, MD :

and you are afraid to talk to your GP about it

Dr. Phil, MD :

and ask for an appointment.

Customer:

Do i tell them that i have spoken to you?

Dr. Phil, MD :

you can if you like

Customer:

What was the word you used?

Dr. Phil, MD :

bipolar 2?

Customer:

Bipolar 2.

Dr. Phil, MD :

yes

Customer:

Is is genetic?

Customer:

sorry about the 5 million questions

Dr. Phil, MD :

there is a genetic link yes

Dr. Phil, MD :

no problem Lisa

Dr. Phil, MD :

I know you are just nervous

Dr. Phil, MD :

I understand

Customer:

told you i talk alot

Dr. Phil, MD :

LOL

Dr. Phil, MD :

:)

Dr. Phil, MD :

I see that

Customer:

More when im nervous, and generally quicker and most people don't understand what im saying

Dr. Phil, MD :

I see

Customer:

It's just alot of information to take in. My hearts beating really fast.

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay just try to calm down

Dr. Phil, MD :

Lisa, did I do good work for you today ?

Customer:

Yes, i think so

Dr. Phil, MD :

good. :)

Dr. Phil, MD :

would you mind rating me positive when you are all set?

Dr. Phil, MD :

I appreciate your time and kindness

Customer:

Okay, how do i do that?

Dr. Phil, MD :

just click the positive face at the bottom

Dr. Phil, MD :

good or excellent are the most fun to hit :)

Customer:

Oh i see it, "Unless you rate "ok services" or higher, your Expert will not receive credit" But i don't see any faces

Dr. Phil, MD :

good or excellent

Dr. Phil, MD :

I think the UK site is different

Dr. Phil, MD :

sorry

Customer:

Dr. Phil, MD :

Dr. Phil, MD :
