This is Dr. David
I am a cancer doctor
I am sorry about your father having lung cancer.
lung cancer often can spread to mediastinal lymph nodes.
yes, the cancer can spread quicker if it has spread to lymph nodes.
has he received treatment lung cancer?
radiation and chemotherapy?
was he a smoker?
Thank you. Well fight it! Not as yet. As far as im aware, they're doing a blood test to see if the cancer will mutate in order to get rid of it. He's been a heavy smoker ! He has now stopped completely, but it seems too little too late. He's had a PET scan and the cancer is only in his lung. It's very small and we've been told it isn't terminal. He has apparently only just gone into lymph nodes, but I've absolutely no understanding of what it is. Lymph nodes are a part of the body?
yes, lymph nodes are part of the body's immune system and help filter lymph fluid which flows around the body and is part of the immune system.
cancer cells can hitch a ride in the lymphatic fluid in the lungs and spread along lymphatic channels in the lungs and get caught in lymph nodes in the mediastinum which is above the heart and between the lungs
where lots of lymph nodes reside and cancer can grow in these lymph nodes.
there are 3 levels of lymph nodes in the mediastinum, N1, N2, N3.
usually when cancer spreads to level N2 or N3 nodes, then surgery is usually not recommended and radiation and chemotherapy are recommended.
hopefully he can tolerate his treatments.
good luck in the fight.
