I'm a 24 year old non smoking female. 2 weeks ago I noticed

Customer Question

Hello I'm a 24 year old non smoking female. 2 weeks ago I noticed I was short of breath on exertion and at rest I went to the drs who suspected asthma I was given an inhaler and told to go back. I went back they said my chest was clear but as I was tired breathless and had chest and upper back pain they started me on antibiotics. My blood pressure pulse temperature and resp rate were normal. The pain got severe so I went back 3 days later to be told id got pleurisy the pain and breathlessness got worse so 2 days later I went back my blood pressure oxygen pulse and respiration a were normal my chest was clear I'd taken antibiotics for 6 days yet I had a high temp 38.0 Celsius I had right sided chest pain and was breathless I was told it must be an atypical chest infection and I'd got neither asthma or pleurisy I'm not convinced and very worried please help ps I've got no past medical history and not had a cough

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

you really need more testing such as a chest CT scan and a pulmonary function test where you breath out hard and fast into a tube and a computer measures how much air comes out of your lungs.

Dr. David :

do you have excessive anxiety symptoms? if you have anxiety symptoms, you could be having panic attacks which can cause chest pain and shortness of breath

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : I have had anxiety in the past but it has resolved and this feels more like a constant inderlying pain and shortness of breath rather than episodic
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

well, you need more testing like a chest CT scan and pulmonary function test.

Dr. David :

your doctors can order these tests for you.

Dr. David :

pleurisy infection would be unlikely if you don't have cough.

Dr. David :

have you had panic attack symptoms before?

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : Yes I have had 2 panic attacks last year
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

are you on anti-anxiety medications now?

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : No I had a short course of diazepam and counselling
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

well, anxiety disorder can often manifest as chest pain or chest pressure and shortness of breath symptoms

Dr. David :

if nothing else is found on your lung testing, you might need to go back on diazepam, or other SSRI agents like zoloft or paxil to help decrease anxiety and your symptoms.

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : Can It present on one side of the chest?
Dr. David :

yes, anxiety can cause pressure or pain on one side of your chest.

Dr. David :

bad acid reflux can also cause inflammation of your esophagus and cause chest pain as well.

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : Can the pain and pressure be constant even though you do not mentally feel anxious?
JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : I had gastritis last year
Dr. David :

have you tried any stomach acid blocking agents

Dr. David :

or stomach acid neutralizing agents like malox or mylanta

Dr. David :

to see if this helps your chest pain?

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : I had a Ppi (lansoprazole)
Dr. David :

did that help?

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : It solved the gastritis
Dr. David :

you can also use malox and mylanta the other times of the day to help decrease stomach acid.

Dr. David :

it didn't help the chest pain?

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : I didn't have chest pain when I had gastritis as this was last year and was thought to be caused by anxiety
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

are you willing to try to go back on anxiety medications to see if this helps your shortness of breath and chest pain?

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : Yes I would be willing to try anything
Dr. David :

I would try going back on your diazepam

Dr. David :

and ask your doctor about an SSRI agent like sertraline or paxil

Dr. David :

and see if these help decrease your anxiety

Dr. David :

and help your shortness of breath and chest pain.

JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : Thankyou very much I'm sorry to trouble you with this question but it's playing on my mind. What is the likelihood that I have lung cancer?
JACUSTOMER-3uy7zytf- : Thankyou I will follow your advice. I'm sorry to trouble you with this question but it's playing on my mind what is the likelihood that I have lung cancer
Dr. David :

lung cancer would be very very unlikely

Dr. David :

I am a cancer doctor

Dr. David :

you don't have lung cancer at your age.

Dr. David :

this is your anxiety getting out of control with worry on this.

Dr. David :

the chest xray would have shown a lung cancer.

Dr. David :

and it didn't

Dr. David :
