Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

did you injure your ankle yesterday from exercise or running or sports?

Dr. David :

is it just one ankle or both?

Dr. David :

I see, it is only your right ankle which is causing pain and swelling.

Dr. David :

most likely from an injury from sports or exercise.

Dr. David :

in very rare cases, patients can have blood clots in their lower legs which can cause pain and swelling in one leg.

Dr. David :

it would be a good idea to go to the A&E and have your ankle examined and get an ultrasound scan of the swelling area to rule out a small blood clot in the ankle.

Dr. David :

the chances of blood clot in the ankle are small at your age, but still you don't want to miss it.

Customer:

it is just one ankle.

Customer:

i dont think (am certain it was nothing to do with sport).

Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

sometimes arthritis can cause pain and swelling in one ankle suddenly.

Dr. David :

or gout can cause pain and swelling in a joint sometimes without cause.

Dr. David :

gout is the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint space from excessive uric acid in the blood.

Dr. David :

you can get too much uric acid from high protein foods or drinking alcohol which can set off gout attacks.

Dr. David :

but in rare cases, you can have a small blood clot which can cause pain and swelling in an ankle.

Dr. David :

so best to go to the local hospital or A&E department and ask them for evaluation of your ankle and an ultrasound to check for blood clot .

Dr. David :

the chances of blood clot are rare, but it is something you don't want to miss.

Dr. David :

do you have a hospital or A&E accident and emergency department close to you?

Dr. David :

or an urgent care center close to you?

Customer:

thank you for the advise. my local hospital is about 4 miles from here.

Dr. David :

you are welcome

Customer:

i will go there now.

Dr. David :

good idea to see a doctor about it

Dr. David :

best of luck to you

Customer:

what is an urgent care center?

Dr. David :

let me know if you have other questions

Dr. David :

in the USA, there are some urgent care centers where you can see a doctor right away for common illnesses.

Dr. David :

in the UK, they might not have those.

Dr. David :

best of luck to you
