Customer Question

My children's mother has suffered cardiac failure during a minor operation under local anesthetic. 30 minutes of cpr and 3 shocks later she is in ICU in a Buenos Aires Hospital. She is 57 and previously fit and healthy. Is there any way we could get independent specialist medical opinion if say you were to speak to the hospital at some point with a view to providing a second opinion to the family?
The event occurred last thursday 19th (4 days ago), sedative drugs were withdrawn 24 hrs ago, very little/if any pupil reaction in one eye only, heart beating independently.
I would be grateful for your thoughts

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

I am so so sorry about your children's mother having his heart failure during a minor operation.

Dr. David :

this sounds very sudden and must be very devastating for you and her children.

Dr. David :

are you and her children with her in Buenos Aires hospital?

Dr. David :

it sounds like she very well could have suffered severe brain injury from this heart attack if there is little or no pupil reactions.

Dr. David :

we can not call up the hospital because of patient privacy rite issues.

Dr. David :

but you can ask the doctors there for another opinion from another doctor.

Dr. David :

they may due an apnea test and take away ventilator support of her breathing to see if she can possible breath on her own.

Dr. David :

if she can't breath on her own, that is another sign of severe brain injury and brain death

Dr. David :

have they tried an apnea test yet?

JACUSTOMER-atfzs3hf- :

The children are in Buenos Aires. I will ask if an apnea test has been done; could you tell me is an emi scan can detect brain activity levels/ damage or is it just pupils and breathing

Dr. David :

do you mean MRI scan?

JACUSTOMER-atfzs3hf- :

Yes MRI scan

Dr. David :

or magnetic resonance imaging? this can only detect brain tissue and brain structure, but can not for sure tell brain function.

Dr. David :

sleep apnea tests and pupil dilation and pupil reaction tests are the best way to tell deep brain function when there is severe brain injury.

Dr. David :

I am so sorry again for her situation

Dr. David :

let me know if you have any other questions.

Dr. David :

if done for now, please leave positive feedback below the chat box.
