Customer Question

hello,
I an a Black African male with the AS genotype and I am currently dating a black african lady who has the AS genotype.
I wish to know what options exist for us to have children that do not have the SS genotype given that we can go naturally and leave it up to a 25% probability of 1:4 for every pregnancy?
Is there a proven medical method that does not include destruction of embryos but still allows us to have a baby perhaps by IVF?
Please advise.
Regards,
Richard

Hello

Dr. David :

yes, there is IVF fertilization which selects out sperm and egg without the gene which can help you have a child without SS

Dr. David :

here is an article about it

Dr. David :

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4071672/

Dr. David :

the article was from Nigeria

Dr. David :

if they can do it in Nigeria, they can do it in the UK.

JACUSTOMER-wp02l88z- :

Is this a proven method without ethical issues? The reason I am asking is because I am Catholic and have personal concerns about the use of embryos

Dr. David :

you have to meet with fertility doctors in the UK

Dr. David :

you have to talk to the fertility doctor about your ethical issues.

Dr. David :

the eggs and sperm will be selected out with fertilization.

Dr. David :

and the fertilization will be done outside of the body and then the fertilized egg will be implanted.

JACUSTOMER-wp02l88z- :

Ok. Do you have an idea , like a ball park figure, of what it costs to do IVF in the UK?

Dr. David :

On average, one cycle of IVF costs about £5000. However, this varies from clinic to clinic and there may be additional costs for medicines, consultations and tests. Some clinics may offer a 'package' of treatment.
