there, I have been told by my GP that I have iron overload,

Resolved Question:

Hi there, I have been told by my GP that I have iron overload, I have been referred to speak to a consultant at a local hospital. Unfortunately after a 7 week wait to see the specialist I got told they have no record of my referral and sent me back to my GP.
I now am on another 7 week waiting list, which I just cant do again.
I am so tired and fatigued in my day to day life and no one is giving me any help or advice, I have taught my self on how to stop eating foods with iron and made these changes myself.
I read giving blood seems to be the best way to remove the excess iron
Shall I start this? i really need to do something... i cant wait any longer
Regards
Louis

Dr S.A.Alam :

Hello, Welcome to JustAnswer and thank you for your question.

Dr S.A.Alam :

What was your hemoglobin ?

Dr S.A.Alam :

hemoglobin or Hb levels ?

Customer:

red blood cells where normal but my iron was ten times the maximum it could be

Customer:

I cant wait another 7 weeks without doing anything to try help this

Dr S.A.Alam :

Donating blood is a good option to help remove the excess iron in the body.

Dr S.A.Alam :

If you do not have heart failure and liver damage then yes you can wait.

Customer:

wait to see the specialist

Dr S.A.Alam :

avoid alcohol

Dr S.A.Alam :

vitamin C

Customer:

I cant go through my day without having to sleep, Im so fatigued and cant get through my day

Dr S.A.Alam :

shell fish and tea

Customer:

i have cut both of those out

Dr S.A.Alam :

all these help increase the iron contents

Customer:

I have done alot of research and taken all the changes on board

Dr S.A.Alam :

Yes you should donate blood because high levels or iron with such symptoms

Dr S.A.Alam :

mean blood is getting too thick

Customer:

I just feel no change yet an these changes have been going for about 6 weeks so far

Customer:

ok, my gp said my ferratin levels where very high

Dr S.A.Alam :

This means that they will advise you

Dr S.A.Alam :

gradual blood removal

Dr S.A.Alam :

with chelation therapy

Customer:

I wanted to start making myself feel better as i cant wait 7 weeks,

Customer:

my gp said he would rather i wait for my specialist app

Dr S.A.Alam :

Then best option is to start donating blood.

Customer:

but i physically feel so low and down right now

Customer:

as it sounds the best thing to do

Customer:

i will start doing that

Dr S.A.Alam :

It is true that 7 weeks will not hurt much, but it is recommended to remove blood

Dr S.A.Alam :

if such symptoms of fatigue appear

Dr S.A.Alam :

because they indicate thick blood

Dr S.A.Alam :

which fails to move though capillaries.

Customer:

yeh my body temperature has gone down i feel cold alot more where i never used to

Dr S.A.Alam :

good to know...

Dr S.A.Alam :

it is down because blood

Dr S.A.Alam :

does not flow properly into the small capillaries.

Dr S.A.Alam :

which makes them cold.

Dr S.A.Alam :

You have questions ?

Customer:

sounds correct to me

Customer:

is there anything else i can do

Customer:

or just start giving blood asap

Dr S.A.Alam :

no fresh citrus juices

Dr S.A.Alam :

as they are rich in vitamin C

Dr S.A.Alam :

and donate blood

Customer:

ok sounds a plan

Dr S.A.Alam :

vitamin C helps to absorb iron from gut.

Customer:

is my blood benificial to others

Dr S.A.Alam :

Yes it is....

Customer:

my gp is concerned that by me giving blood that they will not get a correct reading on me

Customer:

i persoanlly feel that i need to try take action now

Dr S.A.Alam :

yes it is true, so no donation 2 weeks before test

Customer:

he is concerned they will get a different reading

Dr S.A.Alam :

this will help to remove the error

Dr S.A.Alam :

which can happen with recent donation

Customer:

so donate what i can in 5 weeks

Dr S.A.Alam :

true.

Customer:

do i just go to a blood bank for this?

Dr S.A.Alam :

Good option.
