Resolved Question:

My husband coughed really hard 4 weeks ago and thought he had pulled a muscle in his side. It started to get better but last week after sneezing it is back as bad as it was before. He is taking ibuprofen and co-codomol, it is getting a little easier but should it be taking this long if it muscular or should we get medical advice?

Dr. Hasan :

Hi

Dr. Hasan :

Thanks for your question. I'm Dr. Hasan and I'll try to help you.

Dr. Hasan :

Is there any pain on pressing the area?

Customer:

yes

Dr. Hasan :

In which dosage he is taking the pain killer?

Customer:

400mg ibuprofen x1 2 hourly and 500mg co-codomol 2 hourly

Dr. Hasan :

Thanks a lot for your input.

I am sorry to hear about your problem. I am going to address your primary concern but later you can ask anything you want.

Customer:

thank you

Dr. Hasan :

As per symptoms yes this is a pulled muscle and he got it during cough.

Customer:

yes he said he felt something pop

Dr. Hasan :

After sneezing it got worse because it was never resolved completely.

Customer:

yes

Dr. Hasan :

Pain killers alone sometime are not sufficient to help such pain.

Customer:

what else can we do?

Dr. Hasan :

Don't worry I will address your question in two aspects; what you can do yourself and what your doctor can do for you. As far as what you can do yourself is concerned in such situations he can use over the counter tab aleve with co comadol.

Dr. Hasan :

Moreover he should massage the area with over the counter available bengay gel twice daily.

Dr. Hasan :

He should apply heating pad to the area thrice daily.

Dr. Hasan :

If all this helps in 3 days, he should continue for a week.

Dr. Hasan :

If there is no response then he should see doctor as he may need physical therapy in that case.

Customer:

should he continue with ibuprofen?

Dr. Hasan :

But there is nothing to be stressed as he is going to be alright and nothing is serious.

Dr. Hasan :

No he should take aleve instead of ibuprofen.

Dr. Hasan :

500 mg aleve twice daily.

Dr. Hasan :

He should always take medicines after his meal.

Customer:

can you buy this over the counter?

Dr. Hasan :

Yes you can buy both aleve and bengay gel over the counter.

Dr. Hasan :

Anything else you want to ask?

Dr. Hasan :

Reassure him that nothing is serious and he is going to be alright.

Customer:

no thank you

Customer:

Hmm will try

Dr. Hasan :

I wish him good luck and that he gets well soon. My goal is to provide you with excellent service – if you feel you have received anything less, please reply back as I am happy to address follow-up questions. Kindly rate me when you are done.
