My son has an extra crease or swelling under his right buttock.

Resolved Question:

My son has an extra crease or swelling under his right buttock. It's causing any symptoms nor his he in any pain there is no redness or swelling either. I thought of a hip issue but then he was not born in breech and also he is legs are the same lenght there is no clicking sound and he has a lot of movement in both legs. See the foto below.

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

I see the photos.

Dr. David :

that is just some extra gluteal fat

Dr. David :

it is not a worrisome finding

Customer: Hello dr
Dr. David :

hello

Customer: how can we tell because it wasn't there when he was younger
Customer: how can we tell if it's hip dysplasia
Customer: I know that creases that are bigger than each other etc could indicate
Dr. David :

if his hips are moving ok and not clicking, then he has no hip dysplasia.

Customer: I am not sure how to check the hips move but he is moving his legs
Customer: they are equal lenght and he kicks them the same all the time and he kicks a lot he is 7 months now
Dr. David :

sounds like he is very healthy

Dr. David :

it doesn't sound like he has hip dysplasia.

Customer: but what can it be
Customer: fermoral hernia?
Dr. David :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPPkrS8ktp8

Dr. David :

you can watch the video to learn about checking for hip dysplasia.

Dr. David :

I think it is just some extra gluteal fat on one side.

Dr. David :

and not from anything bad.

Customer: the reason am concerned is because it only appeared as he got older can extra gluteal fat appear on the one side as he gets older
Dr. David :

yes.

Customer: also because I read that when there are extra creases like that it cod
Customer: could indicate a hip issue
Dr. David :

it doesnt' sound like he has a hip issue.

Customer: are there risk factors that increase the chance of hip dysplasia?
Dr. David :

developmental delays and developmental dysplasia of the hip can cause it.

Dr. David :

but it doesn't sound like he has these issues.

Customer: But they say one of the signs is when there is an extra roll of fat in the leg like this is that true?
Dr. David :

no, this is not true .

Dr. David :

if he is kicking his hips and legs, he doesn't have hip dysplasia.

Dr. David :

have him see his pediatrician.

Dr. David :

I bet they will not be worried about his hips.

Customer: also does this look like extra gluteal fat or an actual swelling?
Dr. David :

http://hipdysplasia.org/developmental-dysplasia-of-the-hip/causes-of-ddh/

Dr. David :

just a little extra gluteal fat.

Dr. David :

I don't see any swelling.

Customer: My wife thinks it's a swelling
Customer: yes I don't think its a swelling
Customer: but you can also see a bit of this from the front
Customer: so on his inner thigh and then all the way round to the buttock as you see in the foto
Customer: but then when we bend his knees it disappears
Customer: it's only visible really when his legs are straight ended like in the foto does this indicate anything
Customer: You there
Dr. David :

yes

Dr. David :

I had to see a patient.

Dr. David :

I would not worry

Dr. David :

it doesn't sound worrisome

Dr. David :

I see no edema

Dr. David :

I think it is just an extra roll of gluteal fat.

Customer: What about the fact that when we bend his knees and push them towards him it disappears does this indicate that it is actually fat?
Dr. David :

yes, this indicates that it is just fat.

Dr. David :

and no edema

Dr. David :

and not from hip dysplasia.

Dr. David :

do you see the ratings area below?

Customer: Hi doc
Customer: ,sorry one more question
Customer: does this extra get more as he grows
Dr. David :

it may not

Dr. David :

it could stay like that for his life

Customer: or does it disappear as he g rows taller or remains
Dr. David :

or he could grow out of hit when he gets older.

Dr. David :

there is no way to predict how it will turn out.

Customer: but does the fact it was not there indicate anything
Dr. David :

what was not there?

Customer: thid extra fat or swelling
Customer: we only really noticed it recently
Customer: can it just have developed as he got older
Dr. David :

that doesn't indicate anythin.g

Dr. David :

it means he is well fed.

Dr. David :

you are feeding him well.

Customer: but is it uncommon to see it in only one thing
Dr. David :

no, it is not uncommon

Customer: because this is what concerned me about hip dysplasia initially
Dr. David :

it is not a dangerous sign.

Dr. David :

you don't have to worry about hip dysplasia.

Dr. David :

we have been through that already.

Dr. David :

he doesn't have hip dysplasia.

Dr. David :

I have to see a patient now.

Customer: they say one side normally has a larger crease
Customer: in hip case
Customer: okay but what is the main sign
Customer: that would indicate hip
Dr. David :

the pain sign would be that he would not be able to kick his legs

Dr. David :

and he would have a clicking sound if you try to abduct and adduct this hip joint.

Dr. David :

he doesn't have these signs.

Dr. David :

so he does not have hip dysplasia.

Customer: Okay
Customer: would it be a loud clicking sound?
Dr. David :

you would be able to feel the clicking.

Dr. David :

hello?

Dr. David :

do you have any other questions?

Dr. David :

if done, please leave positive feedback below

Dr. David :

thanks for using JustAnswer.com

Customer: Yes
Customer: I still had some questions
Dr. David :

sure.

Customer: What about when he is sitting down should the legs be equal in lenght or will usually when leg be more bent than the other
Dr. David :

the best way to tell hip dysplasia is to move the hips.

Dr. David :

if the hips move properly, then he doesn't have hip dysplasia

Customer: Okay so in your professional opinion and from what you can see in the picture you think it's extra fat
Customer: also when you say moving his hips you mean his legs back and forth and up and down
Dr. David :

yes, I think it is extra fat.

Dr. David :

I have told you this already.

Dr. David :

yes, moving his legs up and down and in and out

Dr. David :

if he can do this, then he doesn't have hip dysplasia.

Dr. David :

please leave positive feedback below when done.
