I have a whooshing sound in my left ear, it feels sort of blocked and makes a popping noise when I swallow. What could this be?

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

you could have ear wax in your ear or fluid in your inner ear.

Dr. David :

you need to see a doctor who can examine inside of your ear with an otoscope.

Dr. David :

if you have too much wax, your doctor can help you remove it.

Dr. David :

if you have fluid in your inner ear, you might need a course of antibiotics to help prevent bacterial infection or treat bacterial inner ear infection called otitis media

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : I have seen a doctor who gave me an examination and said they're fine but gave me ear drops which haven't helped at all
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

do you have sinus congestion or runny nose?

Dr. David :

during the spring, many patients can have spring allergies and this can cause sinus inflammation and sometimes inflammation of the eustachian tube.

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : No not had a cold for many months
Dr. David :

ear drops don't help an inner ear infection

Dr. David :

you need to go back to your GP doctor and ask for a referral to see an ENT doctor or ear nose throat specialist.

Dr. David :

who can do more testing on your ear.

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : Would the doctor not have been able to tell if I had an ear infection when she looked?
Dr. David :

if you had a lot of ear wax in your ear, they may not have been able to see your ear drum.

Dr. David :

were the ear drops to help clear out ear wax?

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : Ok. She did mention possible tinnitus but I've looked online and it doesn't explain the full feeling and the popping noise
Dr. David :

tinnitus is ringing in your ears or noises in your ears.

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : She never said what the drops were for but earwax wasn't mentioned
JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : She mentioned a condition called pulsatile tinnitus.
Dr. David :

that is when you can hear your own heart beat because of occlusion of your ear canal.

Dr. David :

like when you sleep on your slide on a pillow, and the pillow blocks your ear, sometimes you can hear your own heart beat.

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : That's what it's like a whooshing in time with my heartbeat but like I say I also have the blocked feeling and the popping sounds when I swallow
Dr. David :

sounds like you have something blocking your ear canal

Dr. David :

go back to see your GP doctor

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : It's constant not just when I'm laid down
Dr. David :

ask if you have too much ear wax in your ear

Dr. David :

have them check your ear again.

Dr. David :

have them check for fluid in your ear as well.

Dr. David :

and ask them to send you to an ENT specialist if your symptoms continue.

JACUSTOMER-bhpm5zqh- : Ok I will do that thank you
Dr. David :

you are welcome
