Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, Experienced Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.
Lumbar puncture is performed when there is infection, autoimmune disorder, or cancer in the brain or spinal cord suspected.
Liver lesion can be a spreading cancer or infectionus focus.
However, this may be unrelated as well.
What symptoms do you have?
Have you discuss with your doctor yet?
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.

I've been in hospital for a week now having various tests they say they think it's some sort of viral infection but don't know what the scan shows something on my liver brain scan was clear so just wanted to know why they need to do the lumber punch for infection tests

Ok --makes sense.
Certain infection can cause encephalitis or meningitis which will not show up in the scan sometimes.
The lumbar puncture fluid ( csf) analysis can show elevated proteins and other biochemical changes suggestive of specific infection.
So this is done to rule out infection mainly.
