Expert:  Dr. SH replied 2 years ago.
Cancer is a possibility but UNLIKELY to be cancer.
There are many causes of unexplained weight loss and the most common cause is not cancer at all.
Some causes include of weight loss include:
Depression
Diabetes
Changes in diet or appetite
Changes in sense of smell
Changes in sense of taste
Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency)
Cancer
Celiac disease
COPD
Crohn's disease
Dementia
Dental problems
Heart failure
HIV/AIDS
Hypercalcemia
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
Medications
Parkinson's disease
Peptic ulcer
Substance abuse (alcohol, cocaine, other)
Tuberculosis
Ulcerative colitis
So she does require further tests to rule out these causes.
