Customer Question

My husband has HE It took 5 months to diagnose even though liver damage had shown up 3 months before After diagnosis he was put on Lactulose and Rifaxamin which initially worked for approx 8 weeks. Since then he has had problems with mobility and balance He is currently hospitalised after a fall on the back of his head. whilst in hospital his condition has worsened with confusion, aggression and paranoia
Is there any more treatment he can have as I feel that the hospital have given up on him

This is Dr. David
I am sorry your husband has hepatic encephalopathy.
liver failure is very difficult situation.
he might benefit from albumin transfusions.
the best treatments are lactulose and Rifaximin to help lower blood ammonia levels
the lactulose causes diarrhea which helps clear out ammonia out of the body
the ammonia is a toxin from the body that a healthy liver would get rid of.
what is his ammonia level?
another option is comfort care only like hospice care to help him feel comfortable.
most likely he will pass away from his liver failure.
does he have a history of alcohol use or hepatitis which damaged his liver?
