Resolved Question:

Hi, My son has a tumour in his optic chasm. The tumour is wrapped around his optic nerves and is therefore inoperable. He has no sight in his left eye and in his right eye he has no peripheral vision which was made worse when he suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage in 2012. My question is do you know of anyone who could help him? I am looking worldwide as this is so unusual. Also can you foresee a time when sight may be possible bypassing the optic nerves altogether as I feel this would be the best option for him. I would love to see a day when he could drive again.

This is Dr. David
I am a cancer doctor.
he should see a radiation oncology doctor to get radiation to this tumor around his optic nerve.
he should see a neurosurgeon as well to see if they can biopsy part of the tumor to find out what it is.
there are doctors who do this in the UK.
his GP doctor should be able to refer him to these.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
There is no cancer present thankfully. The doctors say much too risky to operate as high chance of excessive bleeding as tumour is a tight mass of blood vessels. My aim is to try and get
him more sight by maybe microchip implant in brain which could send signal to glasses. Possible? Seeing bypassing optic nerve? Can you give me the name of someone working on this? Worldwide not a problem.
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.
no, a microchip implant in the brain connected to eye glasses has not been invented to fix vision yet.
abnormal blood vessels can also be ablated with focused gamma knife style radiation therapy

does he have an arterial venous malformation around his optic nerve?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Yes he does. I believe the malformation is fed by his internal carotid artery. We have looked into Gamma Knife surgery but again it was thought too risky and might mean Daniel losing what sight he has. I don't believe there is any help available at the present time. Wondered if you knew the name of anyone working in this field?
