Hi and thanks for the details.Cough can cause muscle spasms of the back and the rib cage. This can be a problem since it hurts every time the muscle is provoked during a bout of cough. This causes a sharp pain and is more pronounced during coughing or straining. You should start on an anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen 400 mg thrice a day and apply Ibuprofen liquigel on the area that is tender and hurts, four times a day. Hot fomentation will also be beneficial specially at night.Keep your chest and back covered and warm and also also take care of your hydration and drink a lot of water. Please do not forget to leave a positive rating by clicking on stars on top right corner.Wish you good health.

Okay, is it tender, meaning does it hurt when some one presses on the area?

No it doesnt hurt to touch

Alright, then the right thing to do will be to get your chest examined and have an x ray of the chest done to see if there is any localization of the infection or pneumonia or pleurisy. This can be done promptly in the ER or an Urgent Care setting. They can also provide adequate pain relief and change your antibiotics if required.
