I was diagnosed with TMJ about two months ago and was given

Resolved Question:

I was diagnosed with TMJ about two months ago and was given a retainer/splint to stop grinding and reduce my symptoms but it made it worse. I am now waiting to see a Maxillofacial Surgeon. I am currently taking Tramadol to help with the pain but even that is not helping now. Should i go to A&E?

I have ear pain and high pitched noises, swelling round my jaw, constant ache and pain/tightness when trying to open.

HI

Thanks for the question. I will give you and answer, use reply to talk with me.

I don't see an emergency

Unless the pain is becoming critical.

These symptoms are fairly severe, and an antispasmodic medication might help.

If so, the A&E might help.

Is there anything stronger that I can be prescribed?
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 11 months ago.

tramadol is very strong, and pain meds alone will not stop this.

That is why I suggested they give you an antispasmotic.

It is the spasm that is causing the pain.
