I'm 21 and have a small diffusing pattern nothing extreme.

Resolved Question:

I'm 21 and have a small diffusing pattern nothing extreme. My mother has lost significant amount of hair in her scalp by age 50 and my Dad has a full head of hair. My Grandfather and uncles also still have hair on scalp. Does my mother losing her by age of 50 mean that I will lose my hair very quick (25 years of age) gradual (35 years of age). In other words is there a link between very early baldness in men and mother being bald?

This is Dr. David

thank you for your question.

the genetics of hair loss is still not fully understood.

there are approximately 200 genes that regulate hair and hair growth

We know today that there are generally some genes from both sides of the family that play a role.

so just because your mother has significant hair loss doesn't mean you will

she could also have a medical condition like alopecia areta or thyroid disorder which can affect hair loss which you may not have.

there is no link between mothers who have early hair loss causing early hair loss in sons

so you don't have to worry

Thanks for your response really appreciate it. So just to confirm even if my mother started losing hair at an early age and I am beggining to lose my hair mildly at 21 it doesn't mean my baldness will be accelerated (5 years) rather than a normal progress (15-25) years just because my mother is bald?
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

no, it doesn't mean baldness will be accelerated.

every patient is different.

you can use Rogaine to help you grow more hair.

eating healthy and avoiding alcohol and smoking can help your blood flow to your scalp.

I would not stress about hair loss

I am more likely to expect my hair loss to be gradual rather than very rapid?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
having mom who is bald doesn't accelerate mpb - final question
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

you may not have early hair loss. only time can tell. no way of knowing if you will have gradual or rapid.

having mom who has hair loss doesn't accelerate your hair loss.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Even if it is female pattern baldness ?
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

you have female pattern baldness or your mother has female pattern baldness?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Mother has female patten baldness.
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

yes, having a mom who has female pattern baldness doesn't necessarily accelerate your hair loss.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
in other words the speed of which my mom lost her will not affect the speed of which I lose my hair?
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

correct

she may have a separate condition which may not affect you at all

if she doesn't have a medical condition, having female pattern will not accelerate my baldness? What I'm trying to clarify is that if a son inherited baldness from their mother rather than father does this mean the son will bald faster because they inherited from a woman than male? Sorry for the confusion.
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

there is no way to know if you have inherited baldness from your mother

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
let's just say I have. Is there any reason to suggest just because I have inherited it from a female I will bald faster than if I inherited from my father or grandad or is that just completely untrue
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

it sounds like you are letting your anxiety and worries get out of control here

there is no balding gene that one inherits.

there are over 200 genes which control hair growth.

no one can say which genes you inherited or not.

it sounds like you are very worried about having hair loss

no one can predict if and when you will lose your hair.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I completely get it now you have cleared it up. Basically the speed of hair loss is different for each patient even if your related.
Expert:  Dr. David replied 1 year ago.

yes, that is true

don't let your anxiety get out of control with worry here

you can't control your hair loss

you may not loose your hair

try not to stress and worry about it.
