My son touched a dead rat in the garden, he said he put his fingers in the rats mouth and was stoking it, im really worried he has caught something, I didn't see what happened until he told me there was a rat...when I removed it, it was covered in maggots!

Hello. I'm Dr. Phil, licensed and practicing internist. Excellent service is my goal.

Very unlikely he caught anything if you washed his hands afterward.

Kids's immune systems are very strong and capable of handling this

I would just wash the hands thoroughly and monitor

Good evening, I'm in the uk by the way and I'm not sure if he put his hands near his mouth

Okay. He should still be okay

Just have him gargle salt water and spit.

It happened a few hours ago and he's eaten since, I did call the doctor and she said there's nothing that can be done until he gets ill I've been reading on line and it says lots if diseases from handling dead rodents that's why I'm worried

I can tell you that getting sick from this is very very rare.

I'm very confident he will be fine
