How would my wife get Hepatitis?

Customer Question

How would my wife get Hepatitis?
Submitted: 1 year ago.

Which type- Hepatitis A, B or C?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Not had any tests yet... But ultrasound today indicated an enlarged or swollen liver. Not sure how enlarged or swollen.. Advised to contact GP in a week. One of you colleagues suggested hepatitis as a cause..
Expert:  TheGermDoctor replied 1 year ago.

Well until you have tests, it would be hard to answer-

There are lots of things that cause an enlarged liver- most common would be a "fatty liver" or alcohol.

But also viruses- like EBV ( "mono"), CMV, Hepatitis A,B,C etc..

I would suggest seeing her doctor and getting some blood tests- including for viruses as I noted

She hardly drinks alcohol so don't think it's that... She is not obese and eats healthily, so is fatty liver likely?
Expert:  TheGermDoctor replied 1 year ago.

Less likely but not completely impossible-

Some people have elevated lipids ( triglycerides and cholesterol) due to genetic reasons- and this can cause a fatty liver

She has had some general blood tests done and they came back o.k, so don't think it's colesterol...I think this tests check liver function also. Is it possible to have an enlarged liver and o.k blood results?
Expert:  TheGermDoctor replied 1 year ago.

It depends on how big the liver is

Bot***** *****ne is she needs blood tests- and an assessment by a competent doctor. Without further information it would just be speculation to suggest anything else

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
my concern is that this is either cancer or hep c
Expert:  TheGermDoctor replied 1 year ago.

I understand

She needs to see a doctor and have an appropriate work up including blood tests

Is there any relatively harmless causes of increased liver size?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Her mother had a cyst on her liver..
Expert:  TheGermDoctor replied 1 year ago.

1) I have already answered your question regarding causes-Further details can be obtained if/ when she sees a doctor

2) A cyst shows up on a scan- If she had an ultrasound or CT they would say if there were a cyst or not.
