I had a CA 15-3 blood test on Friday and the level has risen

Resolved Question:

I had a CA 15-3 blood test on Friday and the level has risen to 61 (from 19 in January 2016). I would like to know if taking antibiotics could have had any effect on the level. It is very important to me that you give me a correct and definitive answer as I am very anxious. I had breast cancer in December 2012 and am fearful that it may have returned even though my mammogram on 06 September was clear. Thankyou

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

I understand your concern. CA 15-3 can rise due to the recent infection. Antibiotics will not affect the level though. Since you were given antibiotic, that means you had an infection. Hence this may not be suggestive of cancer recurrence. Benign breast disease also can raise CA 15-3 level. Liver disease is another common benign cause. The level should be repeated after a month to see if it is dropping towards the baseline value.
Best wishes,
