Black toenail is usually caused by trauma,fungal infection,ingrown nails or compromised blood supply in the toe areas in association with diabetes.
Antifungal tablet and topical anti-fungal cream like Fluconazole or Diflucan may be helpful in treating fungal infection.
I would recommend not to ignore your symptoms and see your doctor in next few days.
