what is the procedure for changing the headlight unit on a

Could you please tell me the procedure for changing the headlight unit on a Mercedes Viano. I have a smashed headlight unit, and I need to know what I need to remove, and in what sequence, to gain access to the unit. Also if there are any tips as to removing which ever panels I have to remove.

The front bumper cover has to be removed in order to remove the headlight assembly.




Bumper removal

Removal
1 Open engine hood
2 Open flap in engine compartment paneling at
bottom
3 Disconnect fog lamp (2) connector
4 Disconnect outside temperature sensor (3)
connector
5 Disconnect front bumper Parktronic system For this purpose carefully lift lugs
(PTS) connector (X26/27) (arrows) and simultaneously disconnect
connector
6 Unscrew left and right screws (4)
7 Unscrew left and right screws (5)
8 Unscrew left and right screws (6)
9 Unscrew nuts (7)
10 Slide lock (8) toward front on both sides
(arrow)
11 Remove bumper (1) with aid of second For this purpose pull bumper downward
mechanic to side until bolt (9) releases bumper
Installation
Ensure that the lock (8) on the bumper (1) is
pushed forward on both sides
12.1 Transfer M AMG bumper See installation instructions for
accessories
Retrofitting M AMG paneling sections AZ88.00-P-0001G
13 Position bumper (1) in relation to body with
aid of second mechanic and insert bolt (9)
into side of bumper
14 Push bumper (1) upwards in area of fender Ensure that the bolt (9) reaches correctly
and pull back lock (8) into the lock
15 Position screws (4) and (5)
16 Position screws (6)
17 Start nuts (7) on stud
18 Slide intermediate layer (10) toward outside This closes the gap between the bumper
to stop (1) and the cross member. Reposition
intermediate layer (10) with slight force to
keep the bumper (1) from being pressed
forward
19 Align bumper to correct height and tighten *BA88.20-P-1001-01A
nuts (7)
20 Tighten screws (6)
21 Turn adjustment nut (11) on left and right
until the bumper (1) is flush with the fender
at the side
22 Tighten left and right screws (5)
23 Tighten left and right screws (4)
24 Connect front bumper Parktronic system
(PTS) connector (X26/27)
25 Connect outdoor temperature sensor (3)
connector
26 Connect fog lamp connector (2)
27 Close flap in engine compartment paneling a





Headlight assembly

1 Open engine hood
2 Remove front bumper AR88.20-P-2000FA
3.1 Remove headlamp cleaning system (4) on With headlamp cleaning system
lamp unit (E1 or E2) (code 600a)
Installation: Insert headlamp cleaning
system at the same time at the front and rear
(arrows) on the lamp unit and then fasten in
place using screw (5)
4 Remove bolts (1)
5 Unscrew collar nut (2)
6 Pull lamp unit (E1 or E2) carefully forward
7 Detach electrical connections (3) from lamp
unit (E1 or E2)
8 Install in the reverse order

Hi Mike,


I went to change the unit today, however the instructions you provided seem to reference to numbers on pictures/diagrams for the screws and without these pictures the rest is not much use. Also your instructions refer to a fog lamp connector, on the Viano the fog lamp is part of the headlight unit, so there is no separate connector. Could you please check you have the correct vehicle.
