Customer Question

Hi Stan,
I own a 230 E Class 1997, recently my vehicle refuse to start. Though the battery is full, (heavy duty)
When I try to start the vehicle, it starts when I hold the key in the on position but as soon as I let it go, the engine cut out, during the short running process, non of the dash instruments works nor does any of the lights come on. Help?

Stan :

Helllo,
Do you mean that starter is cranking the engine, but it does not fire up?
When the ignition is turned on, do the lights in the instrument cluster come on as usual?
Does your car have an electronic key, or the mechanical folding key?
Regards,
Stan

To answer you questions.(a)

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

The Starter is cranking up the engine but it is not firing it up to stay running.

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

When the engine is turned on, the instrument cluster lights do not com on.

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

My car has a mechanical folding key, which I think controls the immobilize.

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

I hope this helps.

Awaiting your early reply.

Stan :

Hello Marcus,
Since the cluster does not come on, i suggest to check the fuses installed in the main relay. It is located in the engine compartment on the passenger side in the control module box. The box has a lid with several screws which must be removed first. Inside there is a relay module and several control units.

Stan :

It is not uncommon for the main relay to have an internal fault as well.

O.K. Stan,

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

I'll try that but I'm a long way away from the vehicle at this time and won't be able to check it out until about Thursday of this week, will keep you informed.

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

Thanks again.

JACUSTOMER-d3buft63- :

Will talk to you later in the week.
