Mercedes C-Class : C200 Komp 2001Intermittent starting problems

Customer Question

Mercedes C-Class : C200 Komp 2001
Intermittent starting problems and now won't start at all. Car battery good and key battery quite new. Used to start first go. Now not at all. Can't get the steering lock off to go to next stage to bring up pwer then turn engine over. Dash lights come on but key will not turn in ignition. No sound of motor disengaging steering lock.
Is it likely to be the key, the ignition module, the steering lock motor ....don't want to spend a fortune as don't have it !!!
Can the steering lock be disabled manually by removing a component without affecting the immobolizer and allowing electrics and starting ?

Stan :

Hello,
It is not possible to mechanically remove the steering lock. Drive authorization computerized and coded messages are sent and analysed by key, steering lock and ignition switch. Then the authorization messages are sent to engine and gear selector control modules.

Stan :

Only ways to localize the fault are by using a spare key or checking the drive authorization values with Star Diagnosis computer. Some locksmiths and independent MB workshops have the hacking tools to overwrite the keys, steering locks and ignition switches.

Thanks.

Customer :

If I take the key and steering module and possibly the steering lock with me to a Mercedes garage would they be able to test this independently from the car and hopefully diagnose the problem ? Maybe even just taking the ignition module and key first before tackling the steering lock ? Thanks. Richard

Stan :

Hi Richard,
It will not be possible to test these components off the car. Nobody has such extensive wiring to link up the components.
