could not open any of the files. tried different ways but still cannot open

I do not know what version is on my old computer, but this has the latest version. My old computer's screen has gone so I can't view anything

So none of the files are on the usb stick then? The old computer not showing anything on the screen can be caused by a few things and we would either need to get it working, or use an external enclosure with the drive to transfer anything.

tells me to download an app? I have purchased the new Microsoft Office package but that does not help

Ok that normally means it is not yet associated with Excel.
Open Excel on the new computer as if you were going to create a new file and then click on file and open at the top left.

Point it to one of the files on the usb stick and it should open properly.
Once opened try opening one of the files directly from the stick to see if it is associated now.
