Customer Question

So sorry, my last session ended abrubtly, as my lap top ran out of battery. I am now plugged into the mains. I was about to begin a session with "JN Hafner" I think he was called. It is about my desk top computer not loading windows up at start up!

While trying to sort out a display problem on my windows vista , I changed the display option from "system" to "automatic". The next time I restarted my computer, all started as normal except that windows did not load. I have a blank screen which does not respond to any keys from my keyboard. How can I access the system to change the display menu back to how it was? or is there another way?

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
I don't know what you are referring to when you say that you changed the "Display Option" from System to Automatic. There is no such option.
May I ask that you further elaborate on what you are referring to?
Thank you.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

While trying to fix a driver problem i wandered into various areas in tools , i think it was. There is an option list in there somewhere that gave me the choice to change the load up display from system, which was highlighted,I assume the correct option, to several other options, one of which was "automatic" which I chose. The result being that when I start up my computer, a blank screen shows up after the windows loading panel runs!

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
Please, follow the instructions below:
- Turn the computer off
- Turn the computer on
- Start pressing the F8 key on the top of the keyboard
- At the Boot menu, choose Enable VGA Mode
- Hit the Enter key three times
When windows loads, continue below:
- Wait 3 minutes
- Press the two following keys at the same time: Windows Key and the letter R
- Type: desk.cpL
- Click Ok
- Change the resolution (Settings) to a lower resolution.
- Click APPLY & OK
Restart the computer now, as the settings are fixed.
Once it reboots normally, you will be good to go.

Hi, I have the Boot menu on screen, however the options are:

1. Removable floppy disc

2. Hard Disc SATA 1 ST3500630AS

or

CDROM

SATA 2 : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203N

SATA 3 : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203N

I assume I choose Hard disc? It doesnt mention enable VGA mode!

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
Choose Hard disk, press enter, and then start tapping the F8 key again immediately. You will be given the menu I mention.
Thank you.
Please, keep me updated.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Hi Jason, sorry to be so pedantic, but the options now are

Repair your computer

Safe Mode

Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging

Enable low-resolution video (640x480)

Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)

Directory Services Restore Mode

Debugging Mode

Disable automatic restart on system failure

Disable Driver Signature Enforcement

Start Windows Normally

These are the options.

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
Hello Robert,
Thank you for the update.
They change the wording sometimes.
In your case, you need to choose the "Enable low-resolution (640x480)" option.
Please, keep me updated.
- Jason
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Did that and computer made the usual microsoft sound when loading up but still the blank screen, although my monitor is receiving input as the little purple light is on, rather than the orange light when there is no input to the monitor.

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
Thank you for the update.
Please, repeat my instructions, but this time, choose "Safe Mode" instead of "Enable low-resolution (640x480)" option.
After you do that, continue below.
- Click the Start Button > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
- Choose to Restore to an earlier time > Click Next.
- Choose a date at least one week before you started experiencing your problem.
- Click NEXT > NEXT > NEXT.
- Your computer will restart and your issue will be gone.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Ok did that and immediately, A header came up saying "Loading Windows Files

A whole list of files it has loaded came up, the first being:

Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

The last being:

Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

Then there is a footer saying:

Please wait...

So far ( 3 minutes) and still no more activity!

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
Was there any update?
It may take a few minutes to load.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

No, still the screen I described above.

Still a long list of loaded files with "Please wait"

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
That is not a good sign.
Let's try this. Repeat the instructions, but this time, in the menu choose "Last Known Good Configurations".
How does that work out?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Hi Jason, yes that worked!

I have windows loaded on my sceen now in the 1280 x1024 resolution.

The normal resolution is 1600 x 1200.

The screen I had wandered into before was the Display SETTINGS-

Properties - VGASave properties screen-Driver tab Startup: Type then the drop down menu giving the options:Automatic, Boot, Demand,System, Disabled.

I will of course leave it on System!!

I have tried to now change the resolution back to its optimum ie 1600 by 1200 pixels but the resolution hasnt changed. Do I have to re-boot my system again now?

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
Awesome! I am glad to hear that.
No, you don't have to reboot now. You are all set.

Hi Jason, I did rate your service immediately we were finished and left a tip as prompted. Windows are now working, although I can't get the resolution back to what it was. I also think that the graphics card is not switched on and the computer is relying more on its own capacity to accelerate the graphics!

Expert:  Jason Jones replied 2 years ago.
