WesPCDr :

, I can help with the RTF file issue.

WesPCDr :

Since Word is having trouble converting the file, open the RTF and and copy the entire document.

WesPCDr :

Then open a new blank Word document and paste the text you copied.

WesPCDr :

This should allow you to continue to edit the document in Word.

WesPCDr :

Let me know if you need additional help.

Customer:

I already tried that. I also tried copying in various styles, but I still cannot edit the text. What do you suggest now?

Customer:

The problem seems to be the Compatibility Mode. It is always on and cannot be switched off. I tried saving the document to an older version of Word to bypass the Compatibility Mode but that still will not let me into the text. How can I get rid of the Mode? I don't think anyone is going to be able to help me with this. I even asked the author to resend the manuscript, to check it wasn't password ***** it's not read only....so what is it?

WesPCDr :

It could be an incompatible font in the file or it's corrupt. Would you mind sending me the attachment and I can convert it to Word ?

Customer:

I will send it to you but I already tried sending it to my son who is an Apple Rep in Germany and he couldn't figure it out. He converted the file to Word, was able to edit the text, sent it to me but when I opened it I could not change the text. How can I attach the file to you?

WesPCDr :

Do you see the paper clip icon above the the place where you type in chat. You can use that to attache files.

Customer:

Yes, I know that but the file is in an email. I will figure it out. give me a minute.

WesPCDr :

Or you can use the following link to upload a file and then send me the link it creates --> http://wikisend.com

Customer:

I can't do it.

WesPCDr :

Are you able to download the file and save to your folder?

Customer:

file:///Users/carolejenet/Desktop/prologue%20n%20chapter%201.rtf

Customer:

This is all I can come up with.

WesPCDr :

Ok. Now go to http://wikisend.com and click Browse to attach that file from that folder.

Customer:

I think I ought to tell you that you are dealing with a 77 year old woman and whilst I am quite good at computers, some of this stuff is like greek to me.

WesPCDr :

No problem. Thank you patience. Let me know if you need more clarification.

Customer:

Could not sign into the wikisend link.....

WesPCDr :

When you click on Wikisend.com

WesPCDr :

it should take you to the site and just click Browse to attach your file without signing in.

WesPCDr :

Once you browse the file, locate it on your folder (file:///Users/carolejenet/Desktop/prologue%20n%20chapter%201.rtf)

WesPCDr :

Then click Upload file

WesPCDr :

You will get a download link after that. That is the link I need.

WesPCDr :

Let me know if that works .

Customer:

When I get to the Wiki page, there is no button saying 'browse'. just upload or download I have tried clicking the file but am not getting anywhere

WesPCDr :

What about a gray button that says "Choose File" in the middle of the blue box?

Customer:

yes I clicked that but cannot get the file I want to macth it.

WesPCDr :

It's somewhere on your Desktop

Customer:

yes, I know it's on my desktop, I put it there so I didn't have to keep going into email, but it won't transfer no matter how I click it, copy it, bang it on the head.

WesPCDr :

Oh, so sorry. I don't know how else to transfer the file if it won't upload.

WesPCDr :

This chat will remove any email address I type as well.

Customer:

let me try again

WesPCDr :

ok

Customer:

I uploaded it,

WesPCDr :

Great. Please send me the download link.

Customer:

Oh shit. Trying

Customer:

i've lost the page.

WesPCDr :

It's ok. You can upload the file again.

Customer:

I have uploaded it and downloaded it. what do i do now? it's on the wiki page.

WesPCDr :

You should see some text on the wiki page that shows "Download link". Please copy and paste that link here.

Customer:

i'll have to go back again

WesPCDr :

It should look like this: http://wikisend.com/download/665214/yourfilename.rtf

WesPCDr :

ok

Customer:

that's it.

WesPCDr :

Can you paste the entire link starting from the http

WesPCDr :

I am unable to use that as a link.

Customer:

OK

WesPCDr :

Or if you can tell me the file id.

WesPCDr :

That would be the numbers before the filename

Customer:

http://wikisend.com/download/573740/prologue n chapter 1.rtf

WesPCDr :

Perfect, got it.

Customer:

this shows some edits I did in Finder and Pages on the Mac but I want it in Word.

WesPCDr :

Here is the file converted to Word. Click on the link to download --> http://wikisend.com/download/275920/prologue n chapter 1.doc

WesPCDr :

Did you get the file link I sent you?

Customer:

Yes. it is a word.doc file, but I still can't change the text! it still says Compatability Mode and reason I cannot go in Word and edit. The edits I have done so far have been in Finder or Pages in the rtf mode. This takes too long and is crap. I want Word. My son did exactly what you did and sent me a Word document that HE could edit on his computer, but when I get it on the Mac Air laptop, I cannot edit it in Word. ????????

WesPCDr :

Do you see the Enable Editing button on the top of the window?

Customer:

whereabouts?

WesPCDr :

It should be on the very top.

Customer:

In the Edit menu...no.

WesPCDr :

If you opened the document from the web link, it might be read only.

WesPCDr :

Did you download it first, then open the file from your Desktop.

WesPCDr :

Mine did the same thing until I saved it to my folder.

WesPCDr :

Then I opened it.

Customer:

I always check read only first. It's not.

WesPCDr :

Ok.

WesPCDr :

What happens when you type on the page?

Customer:

Just tried downloading to desktop, saving and opening will not let me edit.

WesPCDr :

It seems to be a Mac Word issue that does not allow editing.

WesPCDr :

Can you create a new blank Word document and type?

WesPCDr :

If so, try to copy and paste into the blank document.

Customer:

, say it says: the dog is cute and I want to say the dog is very cute. I insert the cursor between is and cute but I cannot type anything in there.

Customer:

I already tried that several times. Doesn't work.

WesPCDr :

Ok. Definitely a Word issue.

WesPCDr :

  1. Go into Home (users) Directory with Word quit. (Has the name you gave the computer when you set up)

  2. Next go in Preferences and look .microsoft.word.plist or Microsoft Word Preferences

  3. Move to Trash.

  4. Open word and see if you can type.

Customer:

I don't know what Home users Directory is.

WesPCDr :

It should be your folder

Customer:

My folder what?

WesPCDr :

Users/carolejenet

WesPCDr :

Or just Users

Customer:

but where is users?

WesPCDr :

I'm not sure. It's different on each computer.

WesPCDr :

The next step would be to re-install Office so it can repair itself.

WesPCDr :

The problem is with Word and causing this issue.

WesPCDr :

Re-installing Word should repair and corrupt files and fix the problem.

Customer:

OK. Not much I can do then. I will just have to continue the edits in rtf. What a pain. Sorry to have been such a dunce but I was hoping we could resolve this. Definitely has to be a word issue I guess. I am absolutely knackered now and am going to bed. Sorry to keep you up.

WesPCDr :

If you can find a way to re-install Word. It should resolve the issue.

WesPCDr :

Sorry it took so long too.

Customer:

Thanks. goodnight.

WesPCDr :

You're welcome. Goodnight.
