I've inherited a spreadsheet that has a column of values in

Resolved Question:

I've inherited a spreadsheet that has a column of values in it expressed exactly like this
71-75
I know the average is 73 in this case, but without retyping what I already have, is there a formula that will take the average of 71 and 75 without me having to re-enter the values?

The-PC-Guy :

=AVERAGE(LEFT("A1",2),RIGHT("A1",2))

The-PC-Guy :

this assumes the value is in cell A1

The-PC-Guy :

The-PC-Guy :

perhaps you entered the formula incorrectly

The-PC-Guy :

or maybe the value is a text value

Customer:

Can you see the image?

The-PC-Guy :

yes

The-PC-Guy :

is it possible to get the actual sheet?

Customer:

the value is a1 is exactly 71-75, no "

Customer:

yeah, let me just save it

The-PC-Guy :

ok

Customer:

ah - how do I send you an excel file on here?

The-PC-Guy :

just the same way you did the image

The-PC-Guy :

if that works

Customer:

Not sure it accepts anything but images

The-PC-Guy :

it worked

The-PC-Guy :

you typed the formula wrong

Customer:

OK cool

Customer:

I cut and pasted!

The-PC-Guy :

=AVERAGE(LEFT(A1,2),RIGHT(A1,2))

The-PC-Guy :

might have been my mistake

The-PC-Guy :

the formula was refering to "A1"

The-PC-Guy :

not A1

The-PC-Guy :

A1 in quotes doeasn't work

Customer:

=AVERAGE(LEFT("A1",2),RIGHT("A1",2)) is what you put

The-PC-Guy :

i see that now

The-PC-Guy :

guess the quotes got added after I copied it

The-PC-Guy :

appoligies

The-PC-Guy :

but let me know if it works now

Customer:

No problem. I can see this will work for two characters, but is there a global - what about if the value was 122-126?

The-PC-Guy :

yes, a slight modification would make that work

The-PC-Guy :

hold on for a few minutes

Customer:

and your formula does work now, thanks

The-PC-Guy :

here you go

The-PC-Guy :

a great deal more complicate

The-PC-Guy :

but should be more compatable

The-PC-Guy :

=AVERAGE(LEFT(A1,FIND("-",A1)-1),MID(A1,FIND("-",A1)+1,LEN(A1)-FIND("-",A1)+1))

Customer:

let me check

The-PC-Guy :

oky

Customer:

yep, great, you receive an 'excellent'!

The-PC-Guy :
