Misfire on cylinder diagnostic code. Local garage has variously replaced all the coils. What is a more likely cause?

What fault codes did they get prior to replacing the coils?

Hi..

That code is a random multiple missfire..but not a code that detects a single cylinder at fault..in that case in my opinion really you shouldnt of had to have all coils to be replaced..as the chances of all 4 coils going is pretty rare...You need to know if the timing is spot on crank and cam coleration..incase this is chain stretch..they could measure timing chain tensioner protrusion to see if its within spec..if a rattle is heard from cold start from within the timing cover then that could be your problem..also they need to look at the fuel trims / also check for intake leaks / oxygens sensor readings...
