Resolved Question:

Hi there. I have an orange discharge (little spots), my period is 2 weeks late and my pregnancy test showed a negative result. Is there a possibility that I am pregnant? I am concerned about not having the period and the discharge - what could cause those orange spots?

Dr Owen :

Hello

Dr Owen :

did you use a good pregnancy test, and did you repeat the pregnancy test?

Dr Owen :

hi

Dr Owen :

Can you tell me if you have been sexually active about 2 to 3 weeks ago?

Customer:

It was a 'first response' test.

Dr Owen :

okay

Customer:

I did the first one a week ago and the second one today.

Customer:

when I noticed those spots

Dr Owen :

when did you have sex in the past 3 weeks?

Customer:

yesterday the last time, besides a couple of times a week

Customer:

I don't remember exactly.

Customer:

when

Dr Owen :

okay

Dr Owen :

do you normally have a period every month that you can predict when it comes?

Dr Owen :

Also, I need you to answer the following?

Customer:

yes every 30 days

Dr Owen :

Do you have any medical problems such as diabetes or a thyroid problem?

Dr Owen :

What is your height and weight (in pounds or kilograms)?

Customer:

no thyroid problems and no particular medical problems

Customer:

my weight is 58 kg

Dr Owen :

ok

Customer:

I haven't visited a gynaecologist for some time though

Dr Owen :

not what I was asking

Dr Owen :

but that is okay

Customer:

ok

Customer:

no diabetes

Dr Owen :

and are you having any problems with itching or irritation, or burning of urination?

Customer:

neither

Dr Owen :

any urinating problems?

Customer:

yes I have such problems

Dr Owen :

okay...

Customer:

had a burning a couple of days ago

Dr Owen :

well let me type.

Dr Owen :

Well since you have a recent pregnancy test that is negative, you are not pregnant - that much is guaranteed.

Dr Owen :

But, you might have an infection in the vagina or in the bladder causing this orange discharge which is common to see.

Dr Owen :

And, since you are late by two weeks and a negative First Reponse pregnancy test - you are not pregnant - especially being two weeks late

Dr Owen :

So you more than likely did NOT ovulate this cycle and hence you would not have a period

Dr Owen :

and also you might be having OVULATION now - so hence the symptoms you are having.

Dr Owen :

and one other thing is that you might be having a thyroid condition - which is VERY common in young women and this should be checked with a TSH thyroid blood test.

Dr Owen :

So to sum up - you need a few tests:

Dr Owen :

1. Urinanalysis

Dr Owen :

2. Vaginal cultures for possible infection.

Dr Owen :

3. I would do a blood pregnancy test just to be sure - but i do NOT think you are pregnant as the first repsonse test is very accurate

Dr Owen :

4. And, then check your thyroid

Dr Owen :

5. If all of this is normal and you do NOT wish to become pregnant now - then I would highly suggest starting a birth control such as Loestrin.

Dr Owen :

I wish you well
