my daughter is in great distress at the moment and sitting

Resolved Question:

my daughter is in great distress at the moment and sitting in the bath as it seems to be the only place she can get relief from severe itching at the top of her vagina it is not cystyitist all the tests have proved negative and she has no problem urinating. She has pain in the pelvic area and her urine smelt really strong. It comes on at night and seems to ease off during the day. The doctors don't seem to know what it is. Should she see a urologist or a gynaecologist?

Dr Owen :

Hello

Dr Owen :

How old is your daughter?

Customer:

39

Dr Owen :

Can you also tell me what she has been treated with?

Dr Owen :

Thank you

Customer:

She has been treating herself at the moment with Canestan an antihistamine and codeine

Dr Owen :

how long has she been using the Canestan?

Customer:

Just today

Dr Owen :

oh...

Dr Owen :

and is this area she having the problem right near the clitoris?>

Customer:

No she says that it is an unbearable itching sensation inside at the top of her vagina

Dr Owen :

okay

Dr Owen :

Well I would suggest using the Canestan Cream (hopefully she has the canestan cream and not just the suppository).

Dr Owen :

Next I would suggest ADDING hydrocortisone cream and if she can get Triamcinolone cream instead of the hydrocortisone - use the triamcinolone instead

Dr Owen :

Also, I would get seen by an Ob/gyn as soon as she can - she might need a presription to Lidocaine JELLY to get help with immediate relief for the pain

Customer:

I expect that medication is only on prescription here in England

Dr Owen :

usually triamcinolone is a prescription - but sometimes you can find it without.

Dr Owen :

but the Lidocaine is what can provide her immediate relief - it is a Numbing agent which should provide her relief over night which should provide her enough time for the Canestan and the hydrocortisone/ triamcinolone to work

Customer:

But what is causing this itching?

Dr Owen :

She more than likely has a very severe Yeast (fungal / thrush) infection -

Dr Owen :

even if the tests have all proved to be negative

Customer:

Thank you for your help

Dr Owen :

you are welcome

Dr Owen :

I really hope she improves and she should over the course of the next 24 hours
