Hi, It's Dr. C. Board certified Ob-gyne. If not pregnant, there are many possible reasons for a skipped period. Most common is just stress. Most women skip a few periods during their lives because of stress. Usually if just 1 or 2 skips, we don't worry about it. But if the skips continue, we check into figuring out the cause. Usually we start by testing for thyroid disorder and elevations in a hormone called prolactin. We may also do some testing to check menopause hormone levels and estrogen levels. Other causes of skipped periods include early menopause, excess exercise, eating disorders, medications and a condition called polycyctic ovarian syndrome. Which of these may be more likely in your situation could be determined by taking more history. For example age, weight, presence of excess hair, hot flashes and lifestyle factors. So the bot***** *****ne is that a single skip or two is ok and most women do have that due to stress at some point in their lives. But if the cycle doesn't fix itself within 2 months, we do recommend investigation into cause. Investigation include taking more history, doing an exam and ordering some blood work. Occasionally an ultrasound of the pelvis can be helpful too. I hope this information was reassuring and helpful. Please let me know if I can clarify anything.
