Had my thyroid gland completely removed 2 and a half years

Customer Question

Had my thyroid gland completely removed 2 and a half years ago due to persistent hyperthyroidism. Have been on thyroxine ever since (150mg a day). I have noticed that in my neck it is very swollen and have a hard lump where thyroid gland used to be.

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

this hard lump could be due to scar tissue from the thyroid surgery.

Dr. David :

or it could be due to a swollen lymph node helping you fight off infection.

Dr. David :

you should get an ultrasound of your neck to find out what the hard lump is.

Dr. David :

I had my thyroid gland destroyed by high doses of radioactive iodine because of overactive thyroid

Dr. David :

and I am on 112 mcg of synthroid a day myself.

Dr. David :

talk to your doctor about getting a neck exam and a neck ultrasound to see what it could be

Dr. David :

how large is this hard lump?

Customer: I would say it is approach 3cm across and it starts right below Adam's apple and goes right down to base of neck
Dr. David :

3 cm is good size.

Dr. David :

that is more than 1 inch in size.

Dr. David :

2.5cm is about 1 inch.

Dr. David :

sounds like you definitely need to get an ultrasound of your neck

Dr. David :

this will tell if the lump is solid or filled with fluid.

Dr. David :

this could be a cyst filled with fluid or an enlarged lymph node

Customer: Could it be cancer? I have appointment with gp on Tuesday.
Dr. David :

chance of cancer is small at your age of 32.

Customer: thanks
Dr. David :

you are welcome

Dr. David :

good luck
