My daughter is 3 years old and about a week ago had a cough

Customer Question

my daughter is 3 years old and about a week ago had a cough and cold virus and a few days later developed diarhea which started about wednesday last week. This has gone now but she has been sick once at night every night for nearly a week now, this happens any time between 9-3am and she is also waking up with tummy pain and discomfort/nausea. She is okay during the day maybe slightly off her food than usual especially breakfast. I am concerned with the vomiting and the discomfort that happens a couple of hours after she goes to bed. She has had reflux issues in the past and we do prop her up in bed, but this has been going on too much now and we are deeply concerned with her vomiting at night. Please advise

Hi, sorry but please try maalox syrup, keeping her on bland diet and extra sugar water with daash of salt. Maalox may be given 10-15 ml at bedtime. Could be due to stomach upset by drugs.

If any wt loss, please consult GI specialist to get investigated.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
But why is this happening? :(
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
As said, drug could have upset stomach or the virus lingering in systemGood luck to her.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Shes not taking any drugs how long can this virus last?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Difficult to say but a week or ten days and she must recover. If more symptoms like green vomit, please get investigated like endoscopy etc.
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Also you may try benadryl at bedtime.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Why benedryl and why isnt she sick in the daytime?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Benadryl also has anti-vomiting effect. Some stomach related autonomic nervous system induced symptoms are aggravated in sleep.

Im very worried she seems in pain could it be reflux? She is doing it every night the duarrhea stopped though
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Please try giving smaller feed before bed, and try baby gripe mixture 2-3 times daily for cry due to stomach pain. Reflux is likely if the vomit smells acidic and sour.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Why would she suddenly have reflux? I dont understand she was fine before this diarrhea struck last week its very upsetting. Its always a couple of hours after bedtime. But the sickness csn come very late.
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Faster cure can occur if she is kept nil by mouth and fed IV, but not needed. May just try benadryl, domstal etc few days before bed along with maalox if vomit smells.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
what do you think it is causing all this?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Simple stomach upset, due to a virus. It may also cause temporary enzyme secretion deficiency.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Oh no whats that
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Glands secreting digestive enzyme temporarily underproduce. Will recover with time.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Should I give reflux medicine? How can I make her back to normal again its very horrible to see :(
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Please tell me when she should make full recovery im so worried?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Please give once daily renitidine. With night dish also give an enzyme syrup. If not having fresh symptoms, will take about a week to get well. Get her checked by your pediatrician asap for weight measure etc.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
What do you mean by fresh symtoms and what medicines are they? Can I buy over the counter?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Like diarrhea, green or yellow vomit, distension of tummy, etcEnzyme drops etc available OTC without prescription.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Thank you so your pretty certain its a stomach virus even though shes only sick at night? Your not worried? Have you seen this before?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
this often occurs with flu like illnesses. No need to worry if she is not losing weight, has good stamina and normal feces and has no green, yellow vomit.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Why the strange pattern of times though? It wouldnt be cyclical vomiting syndrome would it? :(
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
No this cyclic vomiting is repeated & dehydrating illness. Night time event common with sore stomach muscle.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Why do you think she has a sore stomach muscle?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
From the symptom of night vomoting.
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Vomiting
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
the vomiting would of made her tummy sore? How do I get this better?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
Its the virus. Will gradually recover. Please give last bland meal 2-3 hours before bedtime and no milk at that hour.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Ive given milk is that okay?
Expert:  Dr. Y. Vasavada replied 6 months ago.
but yogurt would be better.
