Customer Question

I have a citroen dispatch year 2000. It fails to start many times when cold. Once it starts it will be fine for that day until the next day. Can you help.

It also starts easier in the summer rather than the winter when it is cold

Mark :

Hello, my name is Mark and I will try help you with this.

Mark :

If this is a diesel engine then the first thing you need to check are all the glowplugs are working ok.

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

Yes they are

Mark :

Did you measure how much current they were using?

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

no what should that be?

Mark :

Initially about 60 Amps and reduces as they warm up

Mark :

How did you check them?

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

Someone else checked them for me

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

how do you recommend I check them?

Mark :

With an ammeter.

Mark :

An induction amp clamp meter is easiest.

Mark :

The other way is to remove them from the cylinder head and connect them to a battery using jump leads to see if they glow or not.

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

OK I can do that

Appart from the glow plugs what else should I look at?

Mark :

Water in the fuel filter.

Mark :

Wrong or contaminated engine oil.

Mark :

Starter current draw being too high.

Mark :

Air in fuel system.

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

there is no water in the fuel

Mark :

Did you bleed the filter to check?

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

there is no air in the fuel system. I bled this. No signs of water or air

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

oil is only new and the problem existed before the oil change

Mark :

Did you open the drain of the fuel filter and capture what came out?

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

starter current, do you know what that should be?>

Mark :

What size engine?

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

1.9 diesel

Mark :

About 200 Amps

Mark :

I think you need to go back to the glowplugs and have them rechecked.

Mark :

When the glowplugs are out it would be a good idea to check the cylinder compressions.

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

OK I will check them. It will be tomorrow when I get to do that

Mark :

Ok

Mark :

Have a happy new year when it comes.

Mark :

Please remember to rate my assistance.

Mark :

Thanks.

Mark :

Mark.

JACUSTOMER-4hkwdcii- :

OK thanks

Mark :

How did you get on with the testing?
