Why does the rev counter on my 2004 Peugeot 407 fluctuate when

Resolved Question:

Why does the rev counter on my 2004 Peugeot 407 fluctuate when the engine is idling - also - on occasions there appears to be a momentary loss of power when mobile - this may last for a few trips then disappear and return at some later date.

Mark :

Hello, my name is XXXXX XXXXX I will try help you with this.

Mark :

How much does it fluctuate when idling?

Customer:

Hello Mark - only slightly - up to the 1000 mark

Mark :

What does it normally idle at?

Mark :

Is it a petrol or diesel?

Customer:

a little over 700

Customer:

diesel

Mark :

What cc

Customer:

1997

Mark :

The idle speed should be about 800 +- 50 so it doesn't seem too bad.

Mark :

Does it feel like it misfires or lacks power?

Customer:

when mobile it is only momentarily, like a cough or a stutter, then it clears but can occur throughout the journey - hasn't done it for a month or two but started again today - after I asked the question I went to buy a new tyre - it coughed on the way but was ok on the way back.

Mark :

When was it last serviced fully?

Customer:

MOT and winter service 21/10/2013

Mark :

Winter service doesn't usually involve much and an MOT is not a service.

Mark :

When did it last get the air filter, fuel filter changed?

Customer:

oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and pollen filter all changed at service time plus advance diesel treatment, whatever that is.

Mark :

Diesel treatment helps keep fuel system clean internally.

Mark :

I would check the air filter first and then the air hose to the turbo and inlet manifold.

Mark :

Make sure filter is not restricted and hose is not loose or split.

Customer:

I don't know how to do these things - I will have to take them to my local garage - is it something that needs to be done urgently.

Mark :

The idle speed is not really an issue but the loss of power when driving is. If it isn't a misfire then it is either a lack of fuel or lack of air.

Mark :

I would also advise a look at the fuel filter.

Mark :

It may have a bit water in the bottom of it that needs to be bled out.

Mark :

If you can get a scan tool then have the fault memory checked for any codes.

Mark :

If you get P0087 then that could be why you are losing power.

Mark :

It is caused by a faulty fuel pump giving low fuel pressure.

Customer:

I'll take it to my garage later this evening and discuss the problem with him (not that it has been a real problem, has never cut out and does tend to clear itself eventually, until the next time) - do I need to get back to you afterwards.

Mark :

Only if you want too.

Mark :

As I said, I don't think the idling is a big problem either.

Customer:

ok - thanks

Mark :

No problem Stuart.

Please remember to rate my assistance.

Mark :

Thanks.
