does a KX-TG2512E handset work when used as a second phone with a KX-TG7321E answering system base unit..Hope this makes my original question clearer

Than you for the information. Unfortunately, these units are not fully compatible or interchangeable.The former requires the kx-tga250 handsets while the latter only works with the kx-tga730.These 2 systems were made many years apart and will only work with their respective base stations of the same model number/series.They are both built as being "GAP" compatible, meaning they can be paired to the opposite system, but will work for only the most basic of features (will make/receive calls), but they can't charge on each others bases and more advanced functions like call log, caller id, messages, intercom, phone book, etc will not be available.
