I have taken the on off control to see where a leak was coming from and neglected to note the positioning...can't seem to get it to work properly now...any ideas?

If you put it back on and see how far left and right you can turn it then you should be able to find the centre position.
Once you have done that you can then take the lever off and fit it back centrally.
