Were having a problem with airlocks in our shower. The plumber

Customer Question

We're having a problem with airlocks in our shower. The plumber has suggested fitting a non-return valve on the air inlet to the hot water system as he thinks air is being sucked in and this would prevent it. Hwever I'm concerned that apart from if the system was drained, if the cold water tank filled the hot water system slower than it emptied, we'd be in for a problem.

The problem only effects the hot water in the shower and doesn't effect the hot water in the sink.

The shower was recently re-configured resulting in the problem. The pump is in the upstairs bathroom and not by the cylinder which is downstairs. The plumber says the pump should really be by the cylinder, but changing all the piping that would be required to move it for this is a big job and the valve would be an easier solution.

Do you think fitting a non-return valve is sensible?

What a brilliant idea from your plumber, you are then turning you cylinder into a sealed system - this would either crush your cylinder if emptied too fast or split it from expanding too fast.
The easiest way is to fit a Surrey flange and take the feed for the shower from lower down the cylinder to prevent pulling air down the vent.
