Try the below steps that would perform a cleaning of the print cartridges.
Press the menu or setup button on the printer
use the right arrow to move to the option that says Maintainence or Tools
Press the neter button
You might see the message " Clean print Cartridges"
Press the Enter button
After this a test page should print out.
Check the functionality and if still the error apears follow the below steps
press and hold down the setup button
while holding the button down press the options or copy options
This should remove the error message.

Regret tosay that methods tried do not workk, to recap printer will not scan OR copy without going into re align cartridge mode.

once you print the alignment page does it perform the scan or copy command
try the below steps
Follow these steps to complete the alignment process.
Make sure that the alignment page prints
Lift the scanner lid.
Place the top of the alignment page face down in the left front corner of the glass.
Close the scanner lid.
Press the Scan button.
The On/Resume light blinks during the alignment process.
After the On/Resume light stops blinking, the alignment is complete.
Try a scan and check.
If problem Repeats try the below
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
Use your thumb to press down on one of tand clean with a cotton swab and alcohol.
Make sure no protective tape remains over the nozzles.
Close the cartridge access door.
try a copy\scan.
if still no go you may consider trying another set of cartridges
