Resolved Question:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS successfully installed yesterday. I'm now unable to install Canon Pixma MP230 printer. I've tried everything + followed the instructions to the letter to no avail. I'm at a loss - what can I do, please?

Hello my name is***** look forward to assisting and am very sorry to hear that you are having this problem.
This machine is not actually built into Ubuntu like some other are, Download this onto your computer:

http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/contents/ASIA/EN/0100465901.html

Then open a terminal window on your computer. Type in each of these commands pressing enter after each one. Make sure they are exactly like this including all spaces and symbols:

cd Downloads

tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mp230series-3.80-1-deb.tar.gz

cd cnijfilter-mp230series-3.80-1-deb

sudo ./install.sh

Once you have done all that the driver should be installed.

I'm having problems setting the printer up via the System Settings. I must be doing something wrong. Don't know what thought.

As I mentioned in my answer you can not do it that way for this machine as the driver is not included in Ubuntu, what happened when you tried the steps I gave you?

It download automatically without me having to open a terminal window. Is that what I did wrong, and if so, how do I remedy it? Having been so used to Windows XP, I feel like a baby attempting to walk for the very first time!!

It downladed and saved but did not install.
Open a terminal window, to do that hold down ctrl and alt at the same time then tap on T and the terminal should open.
Type in each of these commands pressing enter after each one. Make sure they are exactly like this including all spaces and symbols:

cd cnijfilter-mp230series-3.80-1-deb

sudo ./install.sh

Despite following your instructions to the letter, it (sudo) rejected my password. What do I do now, please?

It should be the same password ***** use to log into Ubuntu. If you did not set one leave it blank. Until the last command completes the printer will not be installed.
