Pixma MP540 ceased to work showing "printer error has occured see the manual". Switching off etc has not resolved the problem. Can you help please?

please turn off printer and unplug power cord

Michelle :

keep the ON button on printer pressed for 10 secs

wait for 2 mins

plug in power cord back in and turn on printer

Michelle :

let me know if any error code flashes on the printer

Still showing the error code shall I try again?

what is the error code

is it a numeric error code that flashes

Customer:

No simply showing message

Michelle :

ok please try the below steps

Michelle :

remove the cartridge...turn off the unit....unplug the power cable...manually slide the carriage assembly\ printhead back and forth
also clean the rail against which the assembly slides with a tissue ensuring that there is no ink residue on it
clean the golden contacts of the cartridges and the printhead with a cotton swab dipped in little alcohol
once these steps have been done turn on printer and check

ok...any error like B200 or 6a00 or c000 that comes up

No just the printer error message

yes thats the error code

the b200 is a service error indicating a fault with the printhead or logic board

please turn off printer

slide the carraige to and fro ensuring that it moves freely and is not stuck

Ok but carriage a seems a little "tight".

you can slide it to and fro few times

Michelle :

also with a soft tissue clean the rail against which it slides

once done turn on printer and check

Yes I can move it ok and have cleaned the rail with tissue as you suggested

in that case it seems to be a fault with the printhead or logic board

Michelle :

i would suggest to take a service quote from a local repair store first and then checking out as usually repairs for such errors are not cost effective and new unit can be opted for at almost the same or little high cost

i would suggest to go in for a new printer

Michelle :

fixing this will cost you almost the same as getting a new printer

Michelle :

further if its a multiple part failure might cost even more

Michelle :

i hope you understand that i can diagnose hardware faults and suggest intermediate fixes but cannot make a bad part work again
