Have a similar problem with my A3 HP printer.
I have been using it for two years and now it is saying cannot communicate with printer.
Could it be due to upgrading my Avast Security software?

I'm sorry about the issue. Is the printer wireless? Or is the printer connected to the computer with a USB cable?

Do you have windows xp, vista, or 7, or 8, or mac computer?

Have you tried to do a system restore?

If you disable Avast security / firewall temporarily, does it work?

Please try this:

1. Disconnect the printer USB cable from the computer for now.

2. Click on Start\Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
, then right-click on that HP printer and remove/delete it for now.

3. Turn on printer and reconnect it to the computer.

4. Wait a bit, and the printer should automatically be reinstalled.

5. Check printing.

Hasn't automatically been reinstalled

when trying to print test page says printer has been removed

You were able to remove/delete the hp printer in Devices and Printers right?

Try connecting the printer to another USB port on the computer?

Make sure printer USB cable is pushed all the way in both printer and computer.

Use the USB port at the back of the computer if it's a desktop.

Try with another USB printer cable if you have.

Try connecting a USB drive to the computer to make sure the USB ports are working on the computer.

yes removed the printer from 'devices and printers'

printer is connected to computer via yellow cat5 cable

connections have been checked

as not USB not possible to try another port

It is a standard printer yellow cat 5 cable fitted between computer and printer

Click on Start\Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
, then click on Add a printer option at the top, then select the network, wireless... option
, then see if it detects your printer, then add it and check. (make sure printer is powered on.)
