Printer Repair Questions? Ask IT Technicians for Answers ASAP
Hello! Thank you for your question. I am a licensed printer professional with over ten years of experience, and I will be assisting you today.
I'm sorry about the issue. Did you all of the followings:
1. Disconnect the power cord(s) from your internet/wireless modem/router device(s) for about 5 minutes, then reconnect.
2. Turn off the printer, then disconnect power cord from printer for a minute, then reconnect, then turn it back on.
What's your Mac OS X version, such as 10.6, 10.7, 10.8?
Did you do this:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.
Hold down the Control key as you click in the list at the left, then choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears, and confirm.
After you reset the printing system, the list of printers in Printers & Scanners preferences is empty.
OK - done.
But I've done that previously too.
Sorry, so in Printers & Scanners, you click on the + (plus) button, then does it see / detect your wireless canon printer?
Can you go to the printer's screen and reconnect it to your wireless network name?
Is the printer wireless? Or is the printer connected to the computer with a USB cable?
Printer is wireless.
Connected to router via ethernet cable
On the printer, go to menu/settings/network/LAN, etc. to see if there is any reset option.
OK - Do I want to restore LAN settings to factory settings?
Yes, please restore restore LAN settings to factory settings.
now make sure printer is deleted in Printers & Scanners, then add again
Which one of the four that appears in the "Add" screen should I choose? I have no idea why there are four there (see image).
Not sure why it shows 4 of them. Did you try adding each of them to see which one works?
Yes - none of them do.
"Phantom" printers, are they?
Delete all of the printers again, then go to Finder -> Applications, then drag any Canon item you see there
, then download and install this older printer driver:http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Consumer_Products/products/Fax__Multifunctionals/InkJet/PIXMA_MP_series/PIXMA_MP600R.aspx?type=download&softwaredetailid=tcm:13-835418&os=Mac%20OS%20X%20v10.8&language=EN
How do I delete them? I've done the Reset printing System. What else do I need to do?
reset printing system has deleted them all, so that's fine.
go to Finder -> Applications, then drag any Canon item you see there
OK, so Finder>Canon Utlities?
And do what with it?
drag Canon Utilities to the Trash
By the way, on the printer menu/setting, can you look for the option to printer out the printer (network) configuration in order to see its IP address?
Trashed and downloaded. Now installing....
The "lipo" command requires the command line developer tools. Would you like to instal the tools now?
Got the Ip address too.
What's the IP address?
Time remaining about 22 mins
Can you click on the + button in Printers & Scanners, then select the IP address tab, then enter that IP address?
Did it give any error? Can you print now?
I suppose I should "Add" first?
After entering the IP address, then add it
Unable to verify the printer on your network. Do you still want to create it?
After installation is finished, can you restart the computer and try?
Wait, I just reprinted the LAN settings and the IP address had changed. I re-entered and I now see it on the Printers & Scanners.
add it, and test printing.
Tried to print a Word doc. The printer icon appeared momentarily in the Dock, then disappeared. no printing.
9 mins remaining
can you print this web page?
No. Same thing happened.
Sorry, please restart the computer after it's done installing.
8 mins remaining
Arghhh - just gone from "less than a minute" to 5mins
And I'm back
delete printer and re-add again please
Unable to verify etc...........
when adding either normally or through IP address?
Only tried using IP address
The MAC address of all of the "nearby printers" (the four that apear as phantoms) is a digit different to the MAC address from the LAn settings that I've just printed off.
Although there ARE two sets - Wired LAN and Wireless LAN
There are two Mac addresses, one for wired and one for wireless.
Try adding normally and see if it adds
What does "normally" mean?
click on plus button, then just select one of the 4
Alert - The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software.
Then "cancel" or "Add Printer".
Cancel. Then can you connect a USB printer cable temporarily , then go to the Apple logo / menu, then click on App Store..., then update any Canon item you see?
Ethernet cable from printer to Mac?
No, USB printer cable, if you have.
Don't have USB-USB
Oh, I see. I do have one of them. But it's in the attic.
Can you give me instructions to try in the morning?
Can you download and install the Canon Printer Drivers v3.1 at the website below:http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1742
Wait, let's try the canon printer driver above first
When you add normally now, does it add, or still say "Alert - The software for this printer is currently unavailable."?
For each of the four "nearby printers" that I try to add normally, I get the same "Alert" message.
After the last driver download I've provided you is finished, you did open it in order to install it right?
Please restart the computer, and add normally again please.
Same "alert" message for all four "nearby printers".
Sorry, please download and instal the Gutenprint 5.2.10 driver, then restart the computer and add normally again (select the Gutenprint driver / software when shown.)http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
Can you click on the Apple logo / menu, then click on App Store, then see if there is any new Canon update?
Nothing showing available. Last update was 14/11/14.
What about "Add Printer or Scanner"?
Where does it show "Add Printer or Scanner"?
Try Add Printer or Scanner, then select your own driver/software, the Guttenprint
Well, there was no Guttenprint for MP600R, so I selected 600 series.Tried to print. The printer icon appeared in the dock momentarily then disappeared. No prnting.
Sorry, tomorrow, can you disconnect the Ethernet/network cable from printer temporarily, then make sure printer is powered on, then connect the USB printer cable from printer to computer, then go to Apple menu > App Store, then it should find some Canon update, then install it. Then see if you can add printer normally again.
(reset printing system again before running app store update.)
Sorry, it takes so long; see you tomorrow.
Are we done?
OK - bye!
Yes, we are done for today. Bye! Thank you.
Good morning. I've connected printer to Mac with Printer/USB cable, opened App Store but found no Canon updates.
Sorry, did you download/install any printer driver/software previously for this printer model on the Mac OS X version 10.10.1?
Perhaps. I've been round these loops so often.....
Do you remember where you download previously/
With printer connected to the computer with the USB cable, when you add the printer, does it still shows alert?
Each of the four "nearby printers" options are all still showing "Alert" when I try to add.
the ethernet/network cable is not connected right?
when it gives alert, does it give you any other option, like choosing another driver, such as the Gutenberg driver?
I dunno if this is relevant.....
On the printout I took of LAN settings.....
Under printer Access Control:-MAC Address - OFFIP Address - OFF
When Alert pops up, I have option of "Cancel" or "Add Printer".
select Add printer
select the USB option
, then add
OK, that "Added" and I've printed this webpage
that's good, now, remove the USB cable , then plug the Ethernet cable from printer to router, then wait a bit, then check the IP address
, then Add printer, then click on IP at the top, then enter the IP address and add
Just to be absolutely clear.......
I should be adding the "Wireless LAN" or "Wired LAN" IP address?
Wired LAN since it's ethernet cable
OK. Tried to print this webpage. Nothing. No print queue either.
Do you have another Ethernet cable to try?
Probably. Give me two mins.
New ethernet cable in place. Tried to print this webpage. Icon showed Queue of 1. Then the "1" disappeared. No printing
Should I "reset Printing" and Add agian?
ok, try reset / add again
Which software should I use? It's defaulting to "Generic PostScript Printer".
try Canon MP600R first..., if it does not work, then delete it, then try "Generic PostScript Printer".
BUT - no printer icon appeared in Dock.
great, it is Ethernet cable issue
you can open the printer's options, then it should show in the Dock
then right-click on it on the Dock, then Options -> Show in Dock
You are able to print with the new Ethernet cable right?
Yes. I think we're good.
I've tried printing for webpage and TextEdit. All good.
