This happens for all documents. And when I try printing DVD labels (which I do a lot), the image is indistinct but there is some image there. I am not using Canon inks, but "compatible" ones
remove the cartridge...turn off the unit....unplug the power cable...manually slide the carriage assembly\ printhead back and forthalso clean the rail against which the assembly slides with a tissue ensuring that there is no ink residue on itclean the golden contacts of the cartridges and the printhead with a cotton swab dipped in little alcoholonce these steps have been done, turn on printer and try a print

How do I remove the cartridge (there are several ink cartridges)

You mean remove all the ink catridges?
all of them and fater cleaning insert them back in one by one
Do I do the cleaning of the cartridges before I move the carriage and clean the rail?
which is the nozzle head?
Where do I find the nozzle head.
Also I have switched everything off as requested and the carriage is stuck on the right hand side.

from home screen...go to setup..maintainence...select auto head alignment option

I spoke to Canon who said that using non Canon cartridges may have irreversibly damaged the printer
how old is this printer
see there are 2 possibilities..either the printhead has gone faulty or the main logic board on printer is causing this
can you try running a deep cleaning of the printhead
let me know once you have run the headcleaning
There is no such thing as a deep cleaning on offer.

The nozzle pattern thingy is still not as it should be (I had discussed this with Canon so I know how it should look) and still not printing.
is it missing lines or colors
there are just four blocks of colour 2 pale blue and 2 pale pink no black at all
and no yellow
now 2 things possible...either the printhead is clogged from inisde due to use of non oem ink
or the printer has developed an internal fault
you can try using a printhead cleaning kit to unclog the printhead
but if still problem repeats the printer would need to be serviced
printehad cleaning kits are easily available at printer stores as well as online
you can check the one i am listing below available on ebay
if the cleaner does not make any difference the printer itself would need to be serviced...
OK, this all seems like too time consuming for me...As the likelihood of internal fault seems high.

is the unit within warranty cover
well to be honest in such a case a printhead would cost somewhere around 60-70pounds...if its a logic board fault..maybe more
plus service charges would make it cost almost equal to buying a new printer
i would recommend to check a service estimate cost from the repair store and then decide whether you would like to get this one serviced or buy a new printer
i hope you understand, that in case of hardware faults\jams, i can diagnose the area of fault but cannot make a bad part work again

What I don't understand about Just answer: as the problem wasn't solved (although you have been helfpul) do I have to pay the £26 anyway? And how do I opt out of paying this charge regularly?
