Resolved Question:

DVD RECORDER DMR-EZ28EB - the drawer keeps opening and closing and the remotes Function Menu will not respond, any ideas please?

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. When you say resetting/unfreezing, what do you mean by that?

Nathan :

No I cannot get anything to work, the time is flashing 0.00 and seems to be expecting a disc to be inserted, when I do it fails to recognise it has a disc ab

Okay, just wanted to make sure we are referencing the same process.

Nathan :

This type of problem is often caused by a contaminated laser lens. Beyond that initial reset process, you can attempt to clean it by blowing out the disc tray/slot area with a can of compressed air for dusting computers (keep the can upright only so you don't get chemical propellant on the lens).

If this doesn't help, you can try a specialty cleaning disc (Allsop 23321 Ultra Pro Carbon-Edge DVD and CD-Drive Cleaner) which has little brushes that clean the lens more thoroughly.

If neither of these cleaning steps help, then this is more likely a hardware fault, which could include a bad laser emitter or pickup, faulty spindle motor or laser transport, bad d/a converter, etc, or that the firmware in the player is corrupted. Any of these issues would require repair/replacement.

Customer: I should have added that I have already tried a lens cleaner but once agin it fails to recognise the disc and opens the drawer again

Okay, I was not aware of that fact,

Nathan :

and with that in mind, this can really only be an internal hardware failure,

Nathan :

though that isn't surprising as this is getting to be a 7 year old model, and those lens components do fail with age/use.
The last step to take is to do a deeper reset of the system:

1) Unplug the power cord from the recorder, at the mains

2) Wait at least 1 hour (60+ Minutes)

3) Press and hold the power button (on the set, not the remote) for 60 seconds
4) Keep holding power button while plugging back in, and for another 60 seconds after. When plugging back in, go directly to the wall outlet, bypassing any power strips or surge protectors.

If this reset process does not work, it would unfortunately confirm an internal hardware failure.

At that point, it's time for a new system, as they are simply not practical to repair, and at this stage there are no parts available for it anyway.

Customer: Okay, any ideas on who I should take this item to for repair, I am in The Shrewsbury area?
Nathan :

It is not worth repairing.

Nathan :

You'd spend more to fix it than to replace it. Repairs on average will be in the 200-250 range, more than enough to buy a new system.

Nathan :

You're better off upgrading to a HDD based dvr system anyway (though you can still get one with a built in disc recorder, if necessary).

Nathan :

Ideally, your best option would be to ask your cable/satellite provider (if you use one) to provide you with a DVR box, most will do so at minimal charge, just a few £ per month.

Customer: Don't need a recorder now, just the DVD player needed now, suggestions?
Nathan :

Just for a standalone dvd player?

Nathan :

If you're going that route, I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to a bluray player, which can still play your old dvds as well. The cost difference is minimal, and you'll add a lot of capability.

Customer: okay thanks, ***** ***** hoping not to have to go to the replacement route but seems little option sadly!,

Here is a model I'd suggest. It also adds "smart" functionality, giving you added features for web access, netflix, media streaming, etc

Customer: The wifi built in would help but would also need a web browser to enable access to Amazon Prime video, is there a model which would do this do you know?

This particular model doesn't have a browser, most don't in fact. Even if it did, that is not a good way to use amazon video, which gets very slow and glitchy. There are others that do have a built in amazon app though

Customer: Just to confirm , are you recommending against using the DVD player for Amazon Prime? What would you use instead ?

Just against this model, which doesn't support it

Correct, because it's a dedicated app

there is nothing wrong with the amazon video service, it's just that when trying to use that function within a browser on a device like this, it doesn't work well, because the browser app itself is limited in capability. When these players do have a browser, it is best used only on very simple text based web sites
